Fourteen-year-old Maes Al-Qedra has suffered since birth from a rare and serious genetic condition known as Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP), which makes her skin extremely sensitive to sunlight and places her at a high risk of developing skin cancer, alongside complications affecting her vision, cognitive development, and hearing. In addition to the pain of her illness, Maes faces harsh daily struggles with bullying and people’s stares on the street, leaving her afraid to go outside and play like other children. In 2023, Maes underwent surgery to remove a skin-cell tumor, but she still requires specialized examinations, continuous medical follow-up, and the removal of any new tumor cells. She is urgently in need of a medical referral to a specialized center outside Gaza before her condition worsens and the risks become even greater, to save what remains of her childhood.
