When Beauty and the Beast first appeared in 1740, it was not written as a harmless fairy tale. The story emerged in a time when young girls, sometimes as young as 13 or 14, were commonly married off to much older men. The original version reflected that reality, using the figure of the Beast to represent fear, imbalance, and the loss of choice that came with forced marriages in 18th-century Europe.
The story most people recognize today came later, in 1756, when it was rewritten and popularized by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. Her version softened the darker social criticism and reshaped the tale into a moral lesson aimed at young girls. Instead of warning about coercion, the story began emphasizing obedience, patience, and good manners, presenting love as something that could grow through proper behavior rather than consent or equality.
That shift changed the legacy of the tale entirely. What began as a quiet critique of social practices became a teaching tool that reflected the values adults wanted to pass down. Beauty and the Beast survived because it adapted, but beneath the romance and magic, traces of its original purpose still linger, reminding us that fairy tales often say far more about their time than we realize.

In 1954, Marilyn Monroe took on the role of a working girl for a photo shoot with Milton Greene on the 20th Century Fox Studios backlots in Los Angeles, coinciding with the filming of "Bus Stop" — Monroe's first movie appearance.
This series of photographs is known as "The Hooker Sitting."
Before her marriage to Arthur Miller, Monroe stayed with Milton Greene and his family at their Connecticut farmhouse.
It was during this time that Greene captured some of the most stunning images of Marilyn Monroe, showcasing her various moods, beauty, talent, and spirit, with this particular shoot highlighting her provocative allure.
