"Use 'Guardian' Instead of 'Mom' and 'Dad'" — Official Recommendation Sent to Schools in South Korea

South Gyeongsang Province's Office of Education sent an official document to schools recommending that terms such as "mom," "dad," and "parents" be replaced with more inclusive language such as "guardian" or "Guardian 1" and "Guardian 2" in school notices and official documents.

The Office of Education said the change was intended to promote gender equality, respect diverse family structures, and create a discrimination-free educational environment. The document also called on schools to revise official terminology and explain the purpose of the change to staff through teacher training.

The document stated that the measure followed a policy agreement with the Gyeongnam branch of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers' Union (KTU). It was later withdrawn after public backlash.

**The KTU has long been one of South Korea's most politically controversial teachers' unions. In the past, the union faced public criticism over allegations of pro-North Korean activities and political bias, and some of its members were convicted under the National Security Act in separate cases.

Separately, in 2026, the KTU approved the creation of an LGBTQ+ committee, becoming the first labor union in South Korea to establish such a committee. The union said it was created to respond to discrimination and hostility affecting LGBTQ+ teachers and students in schools.

吉野諭さん夫婦事件（2002年）
★犯人は１ヶ月前にも、大阪でも強盗殺人を犯していた

■2002年1月18日未明、大分県山香町（現・杵築市）で、建設会社経営の吉野諭さん（73歳）が自宅に侵入した複数人の男らに執拗に刃物で刺され、無残に惨殺されるという残虐極まりない強盗殺人事件が発生した。

妻の恵美子さんも顔や体をめった刺しにされ、重傷を負い、命の瀬戸際をさまよった。犯人らはわずかな現金とキャッシュカードを奪って逃走した。

■吉野さん夫妻は長年、韓国・中国からの留学生を「息子のように」支援し続けた「留学生のお父さん」として慕われていた。

恩人一家を計画的に襲った犯人らの冷酷非道な行為は、国内外に強い憤りと衝撃を広げた。

■犯行の残虐性は尋常ではなかった。未明の寝込みを狙った5人組は、吉野さん宅に侵入するやいなや、2階で寝ていた恵美子さんを脅して腹部などを刺し、重傷を負わせた。

吉野さんが妻を助けようと駆けつけたところを、複数人で取り囲み、サバイバルナイフや包丁で全身を数十カ所も執拗に刺しまくった。

吉野さんは失血多量で死亡。夫妻が長年、地域の留学生たちに注いだ温かい支援を思うと、犯人らの「恩を仇で返す」冷血ぶりは言葉を失うほどである。

■犯人グループは中国人留学生4人と韓国人留学生1人の計5人。

事前に吉野さん宅の金品を狙って周到に計画を練り、銀行カードの暗証番号などを聞き出そうとした。

■しかも、このグループの一部はわずか1か月前の2001年12月、大阪市北区のホテルで風俗店勤務の女性（35歳）を刺殺し、キャッシュカードを奪う別の強盗殺人を犯していた。

中国人留学生C（当時19歳）が単独で実行したとされ、被害女性を刃物でめった刺しにし、カードを強奪した残忍な手口は、吉野さん事件と酷似していた。

この前歴が、グループの凶悪性と常習性を如実に示している。

■逮捕後の日本での裁判で、犯人らの残酷さと反省のなさが次々と暴露された。

大分地裁は「情理を尽くした支援に対する裏切り行為は極めて悪質」と強く非難。

一審で無期懲役などを言い渡し、福岡高裁、最高裁もこれを支持した。2009年12月、最高裁は中国人被告の無期懲役を確定。

「恩将仇報の極み」との判決理由は、傍聴席を震撼させた。

■逃亡中の主犯2人――張越（当時23歳）と朴哲（当時21歳）――については、日本から国際手配を受け、中国で身柄を拘束された。

中国での裁判は2017年に開かれ、張越には死刑（執行猶予2年）、朴哲には懲役15年の判決が下された。

■吉野さん長男は「父親が殺されたのに、犯人たちに反省の色は全く見えない」と憤りを露わにした。

留学生支援に人生を捧げた善人が、支えた相手の手によって無残に殺される――この事件は、日本社会では想像も出来ない残酷さに日本社会を震撼させた。

犯人らは吉野さん夫妻の温かい人柄を知りながら、深夜の寝室に忍び込み、容赦ない刃の雨を浴びせた。

血に染まった現場の惨状は、捜査員や裁判官をも震撼させたという。計画性、残虐性、恩知らずの度合いは、現代の凶悪犯罪の中でも突出した悪質事件と言える。

■特に、大阪での前歴殺人を含め、短期間に繰り返された冷徹な犯行は、これら犯人らの「金のためなら人命など意に介さない」異常な価値観を浮き彫りにした。
