In 1851 Denmark offered Icelanders full union and six seats in the Danish parliament. In the lobby of the Alþingi hangs the painting of that assembly. Jón Sigurðsson, the man who later won home rule, answered for the room: “We all protest.”

A poorer, smaller Iceland refused.
