🔥 35 Years Later: Remembering the Molokaʻi Fire 🔥
This week marks 35 years since the severe 1991 Molokaʻi brush fire, from June 21–28, flames driven by shifting winds scorched nearly 13,000 acres. The scale and intensity of the fire quickly overwhelmed local resources, prompting a coordinated response from State Civil Defense and the Hawaiʻi National Guard.
Activated in support of civil authorities, Hawaiʻi Army National Guard aviators flew UH-1H Huey helicopters into action, airlifting firefighters, delivering equipment and conducting hundreds of water drops. In just days, crews completed around 200 sorties, releasing tens of thousands of gallons of water to slow the blaze. Meanwhile, Hawaiʻi Air National Guard C-130 aircraft transported critical supplies, including fuel and firefighting equipment, ensuring sustained aerial operations across the island.
On the ground Guardsmen worked alongside county responders, demonstrating the power of joint operations in times of crisis. We remember the teamwork, dedication and readiness displayed during the Molokaʻi Fire Response showing the Hawaiʻi National Guard’s enduring commitment to serving our community whenever and wherever needed.

One hundred ten years ago, the Hawaiʻi National Guard answered the call to federal service during World War I, marking a pivotal chapter in history.
Following the National Defense Act of 1916 and America’s entry into World War I, Hawaiʻi’s citizen-soldiers transformed into a federally controlled force responsible for defending the islands and supporting the nation’s war effort. By 1918, more than 2,000 Hawaiʻi Guardsmen — alongside thousands of Selective Service draftees — served the nation.
Though they did not deploy overseas before the armistice, their mission was vital: protecting Hawaiʻi, safeguarding critical infrastructure and freeing Regular Army forces for combat operations abroad. At the same time, members of the Hawaiʻi Naval Militia entered federal service aboard the USS St. Louis, contributing to Atlantic operations during the war.
As we commemorate the 110th anniversary, we honor the courage, sacrifice and readiness of those early citizen-soldiers, whose service strengthened both Hawaiʻi and the nation.

🌪️ June through November is Hurricane season🌪️
Living in the Pacific means hurricane season is a reality for Hawaiʻi every year. From Hurricane ʻIwa in 1982 to Hurricane Iniki in 1992 and more recent storms that threatened our islands, the Hawaiʻi National Guard stands ready to support our communities when disasters strike.
This month, take time to:
• Build or update your emergency supply kit
• Know your evacuation routes
• Sign up for local emergency alerts
• Review your family communication and emergency plan
• Visit the Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency for hurricane preparedness tips
Preparedness starts before the storm. Stay informed. Stay ready. Stay safe.
Unmatched admiration for the Hawaii National Guard! When our islands faced back-to-back Kona Low storms, nearly 500 guardsman rose to the challenge, working day and night across every island, serving with heart, courage, and unity. Their actions were nothing short of heroic: 138 neighbors rescued, 47 airlifted to safety, and 24 evacuated from raging floodwaters. The teams filled and delivered over 4,400 sandbags, provided more than 42,000 gallons of clean water, and cleared nearly 4,000 cubic yards of debris, restoring hope to 164 homes.
This was more than a response; it was a testament to what makes our Guard family extraordinary. Our Guardsmen stood together, undaunted, putting community above all. I am profoundly inspired by your resilience, sacrifice, and relentless commitment to Hawaiʻi. You embodied the true spirit of aloha and service.
Mahalo for being the shield and strength the state can always count on!
