In the deserts of southern Tunisia, enormous circular craters dot the landscape, but these are no ordinary holes in the ground. Each one is a hidden courtyard surrounded by underground homes. For generations, Berber families have carved their living spaces directly into the walls of these pits, some reaching depths of 30 feet, with a few featuring two levels and underground tunnels connecting neighbouring homes.
When heavy rains struck in the late 1960s, many of the pits collapsed, yet some families chose to remain, continuing their lives underground. Years later, one of these extraordinary dwellings became the home of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars.
