@UNCoISyria today released 93‑page report on July 2025 Suwayda violence, which killed over 1,700, and displaced nearly 200,000, in three waves of deadly violence, two against Druze & one against Bedouin civilians, each marked by abuse: https://t.co/L18K2U9yWq🧵

"Syria is the cradle of Christianity. It is the land where the Apostle Paul was blinded by light on the road to Damascus. Yet today, the ancient communities of Christians, Druze, Alawites, Yezidis and Kurds are facing a surge of violence, including killings and displacements."
"Christians are fleeing Syria to the point where their ancient communities may disappear."
A powerful piece by former Congressman & @USCIRF Commissioner Frank Wolf, author of the International Religious Freedom Act.

Just when #Syria needs more doctors, the new government is firing many of its best qualified medical professionals.
These are not war criminals; these are not remnants of the old regime. These are professional Syrians who happen to have the wrong religion.
Abducted Alawite women in #syria said the interim gov's Security Service failed to investigate. One says its officers mocked her when she reported being raped.
The interior ministry said it investigated 42 kidnappings, and found all but one were "false". https://t.co/5A2RFjXBm0
Syria Must Protect Its Minorities
By @asliaydintasbas of @BrookingsInst
Fighting this month between the Syrian government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, the United States’ former partner against ISIS, ended in a decisive defeat for the Kurds.
This was more than a tactical setback. It marked the end of the Kurds’ daring, if improvised, experiment in self-rule — a utopian model that combined leftist ideas and women’s empowerment in one of the region’s most conservative corners.
It was much admired in the West but never fully embraced by the Arab communities it governed. It also underscored a harsher truth: The United States was willing to throw a partner that had fought and died for it under the bus when its interests changed. In Trumpian parlance, Kurds had “no cards” in post-Assad Syria.
The new map cemented President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s consolidation of power across much of the country and expands Turkey’s zone of influence along Syria’s northern border. The question now is what kind of Syria emerges from this moment — a pluralistic republic or a conservative, highly centralized regime with little room for diversity — and whether the United States, having spent years shaping the battlefield, will bother shaping the peace by pushing for a constitutional order that Syrians beyond Damascus can buy into.
It should. Syria cannot be stabilized through centralization of power alone. Success now largely depends on how Kurdish rights are guaranteed, and whether the Kurds have a credible political future not only in Syria but also across the border in Turkey, where the Kurdish question — the long-running struggle over political recognition, cultural rights and local governance of Kurdish populations — remains unresolved as well.....

9889 Syrians killed since Sharaa took Damascus
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights documented the killing of 9,889 people across Syria between the fall of the former regime on December 8, 2024, and August 6, 2025. This was "due to the ongoing violence and violations by local and foreign parties, in addition to the widespread security chaos."
The Observatory stated in a report that 7,449 civilians were among the victims, including 396 children and 541 women, stressing that this "reflects the fragility of the security situation and the increasing danger posed to the most vulnerable groups in society."
The Observatory stressed that accountability remains absent, "and in some cases, perpetrators are being covered up and facts are being distorted."
In this context, the Observatory noted that, for example, the fact-finding committee formed to investigate the coastal massacres did not provide results consistent with the facts, while other massacres were being committed in areas such as Sweida.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights explained that, concurrently, pro-government groups launched organized media campaigns aimed at undermining any entity documenting or exposing violations by disseminating sectarian and inflammatory rhetoric that tendentiously links sects to specific political positions.
He cited, for example, the accusation that the Alawites are “remnants of the regime,” the Druze are “collaborators,” and the Kurds are “separatists,” noting that this “deepens divisions and obstructs the process of transitional justice.”
Meanwhile, the Observatory revealed that thousands of detainees remain in prison without a proper trial or appearance before the judiciary. These include some who were arrested after the fall of the former regime, and others who were arrested during raids or at security checkpoints. Many of these detainees have no clear charges against them and are being arbitrarily detained without due process.
