JUST IN: 🇮🇸🇷🇺 Russian Threat Forces Iceland to Prepare for a War It Has Never Fought
Iceland has no army, navy or air force, but growing Russian submarine activity and rising military competition in the North Atlantic are forcing Reykjavík to rethink its defence strategy.
🇮🇸 Iceland has adopted its first formal defence and national security policy, while its Coast Guard operates patrol vessels and four radar complexes to monitor the country’s airspace.
NATO is also reinforcing the island. US P-8 Poseidon aircraft are conducting anti submarine missions, while Belgium has deployed four F-16s and 105 personnel to Keflavík.
The country is taking part in NATO exercises focused on protecting critical infrastructure, sea routes and the strategically vital Greenland Iceland UK gap.
Meanwhile, a growing Icelandic movement is calling for a national defence force of 2,000 personnel backed by a 2,000 strong reserve.
👀 Iceland has never maintained a standing military. Now, Russia’s growing presence is forcing the country to prepare for the possibility of war.
We have now been informed that a naval drone—which is NOT Ukrainian (according to the Minister of Defense)—loaded with explosives was destroyed 80-100 meters from the Neptun Deep platform.
F-16 were used to destroy it, firing their onboard cannons (the cannon is a 6-barrel rotary machine gun, kind of like the one on the Predator that Schwarzenegger used in the forest—only more powerful). Given that it was 80–100 meters away and wasn’t engaged by anyone on the platform or in the surrounding area, this concerns me.
Back in 2023, I wrote about a secret everyone knew: Neptun Deep project is located within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ), so it’s in our part of the Black Sea, but it is NOT protected by NATO.
This exclusive zone borders Ukraine to the north and northeast. Except that the northeastern part is de facto controlled by russia, as it is the EEZ of the Crimean Peninsula.
Neptun Deep is focused on gas extraction and transforming Romania into the largest producer and exporter of gas in the European Union. Who do you think is most economically affected by this? You guessed it: russia.
Because gas will be extracted from the Pelican block for at least the next 20 years. Do you think we no longer need gas? We do—for example, for massive AI data centers, which are energy-intensive. Neptun Deep is such a strategic and beneficial project for Romania—and so detrimental to russia—that as early as 2023, I, a simple man with some wartime experience, predicted that the russians would target Neptun Deep. They will use hybrid attacks against our project.
The Ministry of Defense and the Romanian Presidency must provide us with assurances and some information (of the kind that does not compromise OPSEC) on how we will protect our project.
If the drone turns out to be russian—as I am convinced it is—then the russian ambassador in Bucharest must be expelled immediately, as today’s incident constitutes a direct attack on Romania’s energy security and the prosperity brought about by the development there. No mercy! Get out!
Visiting Ukraine today, 4 1/2 years after the brutal and unprovoked invasion by Russia, I sense that the Ukrainians’ steely will and commitment to defend their freedom is even greater today then when the Russian tanks first rolled.
Ukraine is winning this War. With the right support of America and Our Allies, the brave Ukrainian people can achieve a victory for freedom for themselves and the Free World.🇺🇸🇺🇦
Evgeniy Khmara:
I met with @SenBlumenthal.
I thanked him for his support and for his significant personal efforts to achieve a just peace for Ukraine.
We focused on how to build long-term, mutually beneficial relations between Ukraine and the United States.
Modern warfare is changing very rapidly. Ukraine has unique experience in adapting to changes on the battlefield and developing solutions that can quickly move from concept to combat application. We are ready to share this expertise with our partners.
Together with Acting Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Brigadier General Serhii Sobko, we briefed the Senator on the situation at the front, current threats, and the changes we are implementing to make our fight more effective.
U.S. support is critically important to protecting our people. The United States can help stop this war on Ukraine’s terms.
I also emphasized the importance of continuing to restrict russia’s financial capabilities. This directly affects the aggressor’s ability to continue the war.
I am grateful to Senator Blumenthal, Congress, the U.S. administration, and the American people for their support for Ukraine.
🇺🇦 Wherever the blue-and-yellow flag flies, freedom lives.
Thanks to the courage and sacrifice of Ukraine’s defenders, our colors of resistance are known around the world.
We hold it high. We will prevail.
En ce Jour de l’Indépendance de l’Ukraine, la France salue un peuple qui défend sa liberté, sa souveraineté, son avenir.
On ne soumet pas un peuple libre.
L’Ukraine est debout.
