The observation that modern Islamic movements failed to provide solutions to present realities is a valid concern.

The solution, however, is not to adopt institutional approaches that contradict or abandon core Islamic teachings, but rather to communicate a vision of how authentic implementation of Islam addresses present concerns and crises.

Similar to the formula لا اله الا الله, this requires first rejecting systems based upon practices that contradict Islam. The affirmation of Allah's unity requires rejection of and enmity toward that which is worshipped other than Allah.

As has been the case since the beginning of Islam, the first step is much harder than the second. The kuffar of Quraysh had no problem with affirming Allah's lordship - they had a problem with worshipping deities other than Allah.

Likewise, today most Muslims have no problem affirming the superiority or the (theoretical) supremacy of sharia, but they struggle to abandon the idea of a lifestyle modelled after standards established by Western powers during the last century.

These may at first seem like two very different examples, but they are very similar at heart. One of the main reasons many of the Quraysh were reluctant to accept Islam is because of fear of losing their status and the material security that came with it.

Today, many want implementation of Islam in theory, but can't accept the idea of rejecting institutions like central banks with floating currencies, economies driven fractional reserve lending, non-reciprocal customs duties upon Muslim subjects of the state, providing legal rights to citizen disbelievers and denying them to Muslim non-citizens, constitutional frameworks, representative legislative parliaments, and so forth.

This is first and foremost because most Muslims are not educated to view critically the material conditions that accompany these organs of modern governance. You cannot view as praiseworthy or necessary the result of an institution while condemning the institution.

This is ultimately a failure in the field of education and media, because we seek status in an education system that indoctrinates our children with a wordlview based upon metrics of progress formulated by our enemies. Similarly, we allow media which beautifies modern lifestyles to penetrate the minds of Muslims.

Conversely, claims about believing Allah's sharia to be superior are hollow if you consider the consequences of implementing sharia to be regression, backwardness, weakness, and defeat.

In terms of education, this means that critiquing modern lifestyles that depend on prohibiting what Allah has permitting (such as jizya, jihad, slavery and child marriage) and permitting what Allah has prohibited (such as riba and maks) has become fundamental to tawheed in our time.

This is the negation of falsehood, but modern Islamic movements also fall short in affirmation of the truth. In the modern context, this affirmation means formulating and conveying a clear, practical, and realistic vision of what success looks like, and imbuing the Muslims with love of this vision.

This love is a reflection and an extension of the hatred of modern lifestyles. It means a stronger connection to the rhythms nature, reliance on community rather than money and technology, constant involvement in jihad, electricity going out and the stars becoming more visible. It means a level of freedom and purifying hardship most of us can't imagine.
