Persidangan Sains-Polisi Pembangunan Belia Malaysia 2026, organised by Kementerian Belia & Sukan on 30 April 2026, featured insightful discussions on the urgent need to transform Malaysia’s youth ecosystem.

ASM CEO, Puan Hazami Habib, was one of three panellists who highlighted critical issues from declining STEM participation and brain drain, to the need for a stronger innovation ecosystem. She emphasised that Malaysia must undergo a fundamental shift, from being consumers of technology to creators of innovation. This is not just about acquiring technical skills, but about cultivating a creative and innovative mindset among Malaysian’s youth.

At the same time, a supportive ecosystem backed by progressive policies, funding, and industry opportunities will enable youth to translate ideas into impactful innovations. Ultimately, it requires a generation with an innovator mindset to not only adapt to change but to lead it.

The Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) continues to contribute its expertise across sectors, supporting institutions in strengthening priorities, alignment and national impact.

On 23 February 2026, ASM met with Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA) to explore collaborations that bridge science and the creative arts, including repositories, STI content, forums, documentaries, and research-informed music therapy.

On the same day, ASM engaged with Pusat IDEA, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), to discuss research directions and mission-oriented approaches aligned with national priorities, thereby reinforcing structured, impact-driven research governance.

On 1 March 2026, ASM received a courtesy visit from the Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, during which ASM shared insights into Malaysia’s current STIE landscape and explored potential avenues for future collaboration.

This was followed on 2 March 2026 by an engagement with Institut Integriti Malaysia (IIM), where discussions focused on its strategic planning and the upcoming November 2026 convention, highlighting the value of science-informed perspectives in supporting effective governance and institutional direction.

On 3 December 2025, ASM CEO Puan Hazami Habib joined regional leaders as a panellist in the Cyberjaya Conversations Summit 2025. Under the topic of “APASTI 2026-2035: Mobilising ASEAN for a Shared Future,” she highlighted how mission-oriented initiatives can drive regional inclusivity, ensuring that all ASEAN Member States advance together regardless of capacity differences.

Drawing from the ASEAN STI Ecosystem Foresight 2035 & Beyond report, Puan Hazami shared that effective science diplomacy requires intention, inclusivity, and shared purpose. She emphasised that the ASEAN Foresight Framework, which uses the Triple-10 matrix (10 S&T drivers powering transformation across 10 socioeconomic sectors to navigate 10 global forces), provides a clear structure that enables coordinated regional action. Together with her are HE Dr Ir Boediastoeti Ontowirjo, Prof Dr Sukit Limpijumnong and HE Dr Hul Seingheng.

Cyberjaya Conversations Summit is a public–private leadership platform that brings together global thought leaders, policymakers, industry captains, researchers, and emerging voices to shape a sustainable, competitive and future-ready ASEAN.

ASEAN marked a historic milestone today in charting its collective future with the launch of the “ASEAN Ahead: ASEAN Science, Technology, and
Innovation Ecosystem Foresight 2035 and Beyond” (ASEAN Ahead) report.

The launch, held under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025, was graced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Dato’ Seri Utama Mohamad Hasan on behalf of the Prime Minister, YAB Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He was accompanied by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang, and Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) President, Academician Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen FASc.

In his speech, he emphasised that through ASEAN Ahead report, it will ensure that ASEAN’s progress is guided not by chance, but by choice. Grounded in knowledge, driven by innovation, and directed toward a future that is inclusive and sustainable.

The 25th APEC PPSTI meeting, held in Gyeongju, South Korea, from 24 to 25 February 2025, saw the participation of 17 out of 21 APEC economies, including Malaysia. ASM CEO Puan Hazami Habib served as Vice-Chair of PPSTI, while Senior Principal Assistant Secretary from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Lee Chee Peng, represented her as chair of the PPSTI Subgroup on Capacity Building.

ASM Secretary-General, Professor Dr Noorsaadah Abd Rahman FASc, presented the 2024 APEC Open Science Alliance (APECOSA) workshop series outcomes and outlined the alliance’s way forward. Plans were proposed to establish formal contact with open science focal points from each APEC economy to form the alliance by 2026, with a pilot project utilising the alliance set for 2027.

Warga ASM menurut Puan Hazami perlu bekerja sebagai satu pasukan yang mempunyai elemen pemahaman, komunikasi, kesalinghubungan, kerjasama, kejelasan serta kepercayaan. Seramai 109 warga kerja ASM hari ini berpeluang untuk mengetahui impak pencapaian 2024 serta hala tuju ASM bagi tahun 2025 menerusi Perhimpunan Tahunan Bakat ASM bersama Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif. Majlis dimulakan dengan Ikrar Aku Janji Penjawat Awam dalam mengingatkan semula warga kerja ASM bahawa setiap tugasan yang dipertanggungjawabkan kepada mereka harus dilaksanakan dengan penuh amanah dan mengikut prosedur.

Puan Hazami Habib yang menyampaikan amanat mengucapkan penghargaan kepada warga kerja ASM yang menyumbang tenaga dan kepakaran dalam menjayakan 153 aktiviti yang merangkumi inisiatif, projek serta kajian sepanjang tahun lalu.
