Connected Health Initiative works to clarify outdated health regulations, incent the use of connected health technologies, and improve health outcomes.
Current @IRSnews interpretations of “medical care” are stuck in the 1990s...modern "dual-use" technologies like smartwatches that can detect early signs of life threatening conditions can't be easily purchased with funds from Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
Here's how the Administration can take immediate action to change this and deliver health care relief to millions of Americans

@realDonaldTrump can deliver health care relief to millions of Americans without spending a dime of taxpayer money.
@brianscarpelli, CHI executive director, lays out the case in @WashTimes.

“ACCESS represents a major milestone in the necessary integration of wearable devices, remote monitoring, and digital health platforms into the management of chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, chronic pain, and depression,” said Brian Scarpelli, executive director, Connected Health Initiative. “While traditional Medicare payment rules have not leveraged the incredible potential these tools offer to improve outcomes and reduce costs, the ACCESS Model empowers clinicians and care organizations to use wearable and other digital-health innovations. We have long emphasized that this shift is needed to improve preventive and maintenance care, reduce avoidable complications, and ultimately lower costs.”

Ahead of a the government shutdown, we are calling on Congressional leadership to do the right thing and preserve telehealth access for the millions of Americans who rely on it.
Telehealth is critical to addressing barriers to care, such as inadequate transportation, long travel times, patient wait times and taking time off work. An extension of telehealth flexibility is needed to ensure stability and provide clarity for both patients and providers.

"Ultimately, to best serve patients, all states should make wearable adoption, and the leveraging of the patient-generated health data they provide, a central pillar in their plans.”
Last week's funding opportunity guidance from @CMSGov for the Rural Health Transformation Program “provides a broadly positive framework for the expanded adoption of emerging digital health technology that the Connected Health Initiative called for,” - @brianscarpelli, executive director
"While wearable devices were not explicitly mentioned, CHI believes the guidance’s emphasis on evidence-based interventions, namely remote patient monitoring tools and services, to improve prevention and treatment of disease shows an openness to the proven clinical benefit of wearable devices."
Rural America deserves a health care system built for reality, not one that’s made up of urban leftovers.
The Rural Health Transformation Program provides $50 billion across all 50 states, and applications are now open. We encourage governors to think big!
“Throughout, CMS explicitly embraced several key CHI recommendations including encouraging the adoption of cloud services, prioritizing interoperability, and a requirement for broad stakeholder input to the application and on a continuing basis.

California's AI policy must balance innovation & accountability.
Our member company, @DogtownMedia, explains in a new op-ed how one-size-fits-all AI audits could delay life-saving health tech.
As @CMS advances value-based care and @HHS focuses on the potential of new health technologies, one thing is clear: payment models must keep pace with innovation like AI & virtual care.
In CHI's latest report, we offer policymakers actionable recs to:
🚧 Remove policy barriers
✅ Build org readiness
🤝 Align incentives

To that effect, we provided Administrator Oz and CMS leadership details on the following recommendations:
⌚️Wearables/Remote Monitoring and Patient Generated Health Data AI Tools Should Take Center Stage in Meeting RHTP Goals
🛜Encourage Adoption of Cloud Services
📲CMS Should Ensure That Legacy Restrictions on Medicare Telehealth Services do not Apply to RHTP Deployments
🌐CMS Should Prioritize Interoperability
⚕️CMS and States Should Consider a Broad Range of Health Indicators in Grant Awards and Administration
☑️In Creating Criteria for State Applications and in Creating Guidance for States, CMS Should Consider Views and Experiences from as Wide a Set of Stakeholders as Possible
🔎CMS Should Ensure Transparency and Oversight while Minimizing Compliance Burdens
CHI along with 29 co-signers urge @CMSGov Administrator @DrOzCMS to leverage digital health innovations, such as wearables and patient-generated health data AI tools in order to accomplish the goals of the Rural Health Transformation Program.

CHI has laid out additional detailed steps the Administration could take to ensure an interoperable, secure, and patient-centered health tech environment:
https://t.co/9tiA9gKzBr
The ability for patients and providers to seamlessly share data is the engine driving the development and adoption of digital health management and care navigation applications.
Today's voluntary pledges demonstrate a strong commitment to creating and supporting the infrastructure needed to improve patient care and reduce costs through app-based digital health tools.
BREAKING: Tech and healthcare companies and White House commit to work on #interoperability and user-friendly health apps. Companies will focus on apps for diabetes and obesity management, conversational AI and digital check-in to “kill the clipboard”
