In a recent interview with CBC News, HealthPRO Canada's President and CEO, Christine Donaldson, spoke about the importance of a nationally coordinated approach to medical supply intelligence, proactive mitigation strategies, and strengthening domestic capacity while maintaining strong global supplier partnerships.
“The best possible answer is a mix ... between investing in domestic capacity and also working with our global supplier network,” said Donaldson.
At HealthPRO Canada, we help healthcare organizations navigate supply disruptions through strategic sourcing, multi-supplier contracting models, contractual safeguards, and national collaboration that support continuity of care for Canadians.
“That way if there is some kind of supply disruption — we actually have contractual terms that obligate [suppliers] to help each other during any shortages,” said Donaldson.
As global pressures continue to impact healthcare systems, building a more connected and resilient supply chain has never been more important.

Last week, HealthPRO Canada’s President and CEO, Christine Donaldson, appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health (HESA) to bring real-world health system experience into national discussions on 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘁𝘆.
Drawing on decades of supply chain expertise, a global supplier network, and experience supporting more than 2,100 healthcare facilities across Canada, we value the opportunity to contribute to policies that strengthen access to medicines and enhance supply resilience, all in service of better patient access and outcomes.
A sustainable and realistic pharmaceutical strategy must prioritize:
• Pursuing domestic manufacturing strategically for critical medicines
• Updating public procurement to prioritize reliability and redundancy
• Creating more regulatory agility to incentivize pharmaceutical manufacturing in Canada
• Enhancing coordinated data sharing on a national level
• And aligning policy across manufacturing and innovation.
𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲: The most resilient and cost effective path is a balanced one, combining strategic domestic capacity with diversified global supply supported by a coordinated national policy.

Frontline feedback continues to drive meaningful product improvements across our national membership, and we play a key role in bringing those insights forward to suppliers.
After our members raised concerns about look-alike risks and dose-extraction issues with @STERIMAXINC 's heparin 5000 units/0.5 mL, we worked closely with SteriMax to review the issues and support next steps. SteriMax acted quickly, securing Health Canada approval to increase the fill volume and update the cap to red, aligning with the existing product on the market. All SteriMax stock currently available reflects these improvements, ensuring members receive the updated, safer product.
Members also reported look-alike risks with @aspenpharma's lidocaine with epinephrine products. With input from our Product Evaluation Committee, we collaborated on a revised label mock-up that Aspen adopted. The updated labels have now been approved by Health Canada, and Aspen worked quickly to get these improved labels, expected by April 2026, to members.
These improvements highlight the impact of a strong feedback loop, where member vigilance, supplier responsiveness, and HealthPRO Canada’s coordination come together to strengthen medication safety nationwide.
