Engine 45 did some mutual aid training today with Enfield Fire and Halifax Airport Fire at the ALT hotel.

This training allowed the stations involved to share information, work together and keep teams prepared.

At 5:42 PM, #hfxfirefighters responded to reports of a building on fire on Springhill Road in Dartmouth. Our members arrived to find heavy fire conditions on the third floor of a 3-storey apartment building. A second alarm was called, bringing additional resources to the scene.

Crews worked hard to contain the fire and minimize damage. The scene remains active—please avoid the area.

At 9:39 AM, #hfxfirefighters responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in Dartmouth. Our members arrived to heavy fire on a second-floor balcony that had extended to the floor above. Our members quickly went to work, with an aggressive fire attack supported by an aerial. A second alarm was required to bring the fire under control.

This same building was the site of a major third-alarm fire in 2018.

Our aerials only have two professional fire fighters—below both industry and manufacturer recommendations. To operate them properly on scenes like this, fire fighters must be pulled from other units, leaving other critical fire ground tasks short. Robbing Peter to pay Paul isn’t how a fire service should function.

In 2024, HRM met its own response time standards for an effective firefighting force just 54.5% of the time—and those standards already fall short of NFPA recommendations. Staffing our aerials with a full crew of four fire fighters would not only improve safety on scene but also help boost these response numbers.

When a Lifeflight helicopter is en route, having trained fire fighters on the ground ensures a safe, clear, and secure landing zone allowing EHS paramedics to do what they do best: provide lifesaving care as quickly as possible.

Working alongside EHS, our members gain the knowledge and tools needed to manage landing zones in challenging environments, helping to provide critical care access when every second matters.

This service is part of our commitment to the entire Halifax Regional Municipality, with our members now stationed 24/7/365 in Sheet Harbour and Middle Musquodoboit. Whether urban or rural, we're ready to assist wherever we're needed.
