What kind of golf ball do you play? I’ll admit, I hadn’t given it much thought prior to today.
I was at the driving range earlier when a bloke came up behind me. It was a masculine stripe show, and he was admiring my form. I stepped off the mat for a water break and he asked me what kind of ball I was playing.
“Titleist AVX, son,” I told him. “Low spin off the tee. I hit it so hard I worry that I’ll overspin a normal ball.” He looked at me as I teed up again and smoked a 275-yard fade. “Have you ever considered a Bridgestone?” he asked. “The B X could really unlock some extra distance for you. Bryson DeChambeau used to play this ball if I’m not mistaken.”
He reached out a large, calloused hand and offered me two brand-new Bridgestone B X balls. I knew then and there that this man knew how to swing a stiff shaft. “Only one condition,” he said as I took them out of his hands and teed one up. “I get to watch you hit them.” He spoke with such conviction I decided to break out the trackman to see if he was right.
I hit the first one dead center, not my fastest swing, but the contact was spectacular. It pierced through the air, flying 279 yards and rolling for another 40. I quickly teed up another and unleashed a towering bomb.
After I finished admiring my handiwork, I turned back to see my new friend beaming with joy. “I wish I could hit a ball like that,” he mused as we shook hands. “I actually have a few dozen more of these at my place. I got them as a gift a couple of Christmases ago from my wife.. well, ex-wife. I just don’t swing fast enough for them.”
“How about we grab a bite to eat and then head back to your place?” I said. “Any man who can increase my distance has earned a free ice-cold domestic from Hooters. My treat.”
