The “six million Jews ⭐️” figure did not suddenly appear after the Holocaust.
Newspaper reports were using the figure years before Nazi Germany came to power. In 1913, references were already being made to approximately six million Jews in Russia and claims that they were facing persecution.
During 🪖World War I, newspapers again described six million Jews as being persecuted, starving, displaced or in danger.
The New York Sun ☀️ reported in June 1915 that six million Jews ⭐️—described as roughly half of the world’s Jewish population—were suffering under Russian persecution. Contemporary material from 1921 likewise referred to six million Jews in Ukraine 🇺🇦 and Poland 🇵🇱 as being in peril.
And the language continued into the 1930s. In January 1938, the New York Times reported that five to six million Jews in Europe were victims of governmental antisemitism.
In June 1938, Jewish demographer Jacob Lestschinsky wrote about the “status of six million Jews in Central and Eastern Europe.”
The Jewish ⭐️ Telegraphic Agency that same month described six million people in European areas of Jewish distress.
So yes—the phrase “six million Jews” demonstrably predates the Holocaust by decades. 🙈
