🍁 I love fall, but these months are always hard for me 🍂

They're a reminder of the darkest years of my life, a period of transition that nearly ended it all.

Truth be told, sometimes I wonder if I learned the lessons I was meant to, or if I'm still repeating the same mistakes.

Trusting the wrong people.
Wasting time on the wrong goals.
Building my future on the wrong foundation.

I've seen firsthand how easily it can all fall away.

In fact, the closest thing to a miracle I've ever witnessed was my survival. I shouldn't even be here.

You'd think I'd have some wisdom on the other side of the abyss, some lesson learned or sense of purpose.

But truth be told, most people preaching purpose are trying to sell you something.

The first I've found it in many years hasn't been in traditional sources — at least not the places I was raised to seek it from.

Believe it or not, I've found it here, in writing.

Service to others through my own stories and through helping others refine theirs.

But even more simply, purpose in play.

Purpose in turning life into an adventure, a great game, and turning stories into more than an escape or entertainment.

They're a place to explore and learn, wrestling with my life's worst struggles and celebrating life's joys and victories.

They're a place to refine my understanding, test new ideas, and lose myself in the freedoms and pleasures of imagination.

And better yet, I get to share those adventures with others.

All this was the idea behind "pragos" in Skyfold, and the first step in this new direction for me and my books.

Enough with the flashy branding and working so hard (and spending so much) to impress, yet again, the wrong people.

People who will turn on you at the slightest misstep, as it turns out (read: doing anything they disapprove of, however true to your principles).

And all this is even more applicable to my next book, which is set to publish two days before the 7-year anniversary of the day my life nearly ended.

I wrote this story to capture some of that abyss I faced, while also diving deep into the darkness I'd seen others endure, trials far worse than mine.

And truth be told, not all of them made it.

All the more reason to share this next story, and all the more reason to press on, to keep finding purpose in play and refuse to let the darkness claim a single soul more that I could have prevented.

It's hardly the answer to all life's questions, but it's a start.

Anyway, just wanted to share while it's all front and center in my mind.

I was going to wait for my cover reveal next week to show this new banner, but the time's right. I'll update it with an unblotted version after the reveal.
