At this juncture you people are trolling a man with a disability, open and shut.
He spent his formative years apologising for something not in his gift to stop. Do you understand how damaging that is to the psyche? Apologising day in, day out for having no malice or malintent? It plays on the mind and John has spoken candidly about his suicidal ideation because of that.
The 2 beautiful black men who, yes, were stunned, are also intelligent enough, inquisitive enough to have read John's statement which is sincere.
But to apologise for a disability raises so many questions that John deliberately, through his campaigning, documentaries and film tries to answer.
If he apologises, what is he apologising for? Something he has no control over? A verifiable, medical industry diagnosed condition? We are going down a rabbit hole if the disabled have to apologise for being.
The 2 actors are black men, a cohort of humanity who literally were told to apologise for attempting to go into a school or ride a bus but because brave campaigners fought for the right not to be "other", segregation no longer is a legal reality. So instead of outlets like yours quoting "outrage and disgust" from "sources close to the actors", maybe in good time we'll hear from them, in context and in clarity.
The only wiggle room anyone has morally when arguing for an apology is courtesy. That John choses to call the men and informally explain his condition, the scenario on the night ( stressful for a Tourettes sufferer) and offers just a personal "I hope you understand". A common courtesy many would agree with.
But be under no illusion, John needs not to apologise for his disability and any explanation of his condition to anyone offended by words he involuntarily said should be his choice, in his time and in tne basis that he can not ( UK law backs this up) be blamed for an involuntary act.
Your headline and desperate need for this to be about racism when in fact it is about disability and the grey area of involuntary act meeting understandable offence, an area that if outlets like you took the heat out of the situation would more than likely happen between the 3 men.
2/2 @TheRAC_UK it wasn’t happening. Every person I have spoken to since 5.30pm yest couldn’t have been less helpful or bothered. Shocking customer service. Won’t ever ever renew with them
1/2appalling service from @TheRAC_UK. Tyre blew at 5.30pm yesterday, still no car! Was told it would be today, still not happened. Been told it will be tomorrow, won’t hold my breath!! They knew I had a hospital appointment today, not even the courtesy to call and say it…
@KirstieMAllsopp 2/2.. sit, throws food, is distressed. He has a younger sibling who will copy behaviour. Without a screen they couldn’t go away and enjoy all the other aspects of important family time, beach, parks, walks etc. and boy do they need the break! Give grace where needed and empathy
@KirstieMAllsopp 1/2 I would have 100% agreed with you until recently. My children never had anything other than colouring or books at the table when little but my 3yr old grandson is severely autistic. The only way the whole family can sit together for a meal is with a screen. Without he can’t…
@KirstieMAllsopp 2/2 they simply couldn’t go away and enjoy all the other aspects of family time, the beach, parks etc. A screen at meal times is the only way they can enjoy what many take for granted, time away together, and boy do they need it! Judge less, learn more before commenting
@KirstieMAllsopp A while ago I would have agreed, I have raised 3 and although before the days of iPads they did have Nintendo DS. Never at the table tho. Colouring and books etc. however I know have a severely autistic grandson and without a screen at meal times they simply couldn’t go away 1/2
@JujuliaGrace They chose to become doctors, I assume they went into it with their eyes wide open. Just as I did when I became a midwife, just like my colleagues who are nurses, ODP’s, their parents who are fire fighters and police officers. Don’t get me started on the salary of teachers!!
@Jenny_1884 I must be very fortunate because I have this thankfully as it’s been much needed over the past 18 months. I can’t imagine having to start to explain my medical history with a different doctor every time
@MichaelRosenYes When you been through, and survived all you have (me too, very similar experience) being ‘old’ and getting called ‘old’ is something to be celebrated!! Becoming old is a privilege
@drkeithsiau @safarabdulla I am in this very situation. I weigh 65kilos but suffer from malnutrition due to malabsorption following gastric bypass. Amongst many other complications resulting from the surgery
@laurakaykelly The NHS very recently saved my life after Covid, sepsis and pneumonia. I was in a coma for 2 weeks, hospital for 2 months, at home now with my family. Forever grateful to the NHS. I’m so glad you got to bring him home x
