if people haven’t seen it already, i really recommend they go watch andy burnham’s speech to the commons on the hillsborough findings. not only is it incredibly moving, but you can see a real passion and integrity in andy that truly cannot be faked.

@AndyMcDonaldMP I agree wholeheartedly Andy! Such a wonderful evening and a tremendous celebration of our town’s soul - it’s strength, culture, talent and diversity! #WeAreMiddlesbrough
And don’t you think this project should be part of Middlesbrough’s bid for #CityofCulture ?
I’ve been saying two things in response to the fossil fools calling for more drilling in the North Sea - both are cutting through. First is we don't set the price of our own North Sea oil and gas, second is we have very little left, around 10%. More drilling can't help us with this energy (price) crisis and the idea of some kind of oil self sufficiency for Britain is a fantasy. Now comes this revelation - the hundreds of licences the Tories issued, over a 14 year period, in pursuit of this fantasy - resulted in just one months worth of gas being produced. The reality is starkly different to the fantasy Farage and Badenoch would have us believe.

Ed Miliband gets relentless bile from the right for his ‘ideological’ commitment to clean, cheap renewable energy - just as Nye Bevan once did for creating the NHS. Yet on March 25 97.7 % of our electricity was from renewables. A revolution is unfolding. https://t.co/BdGG1gkHuD

I have launched a survey to ask how we should spend £40mfrom Labour's Pride in Place programme in Thorntree and Park End and lots of people have now submitted their responses - but we need as many as possible.

Today I am launching a survey to ask how we should spend £40m in Thorntree and Park End.
The Labour Government is investing this huge sum through its Pride in Place programme.
But it is up for people in TS3 to decide how best it is spent - take part https://t.co/ndDY0z1pMP

Ending the Conservative two-child limit will lift thousands of children in Middlesbrough & Thornaby East and across the Tees Valley out of hardship, and I welcome it as the most immediate, cost-effective step to cut child poverty.
Asylum seekers are not responsible for dividing our society, it’s the racist rhetoric and policies taken straight from the far right playbook.
These new policies are nothing short of shameful. The government must think again.

Plans to leave refugees in a state of perpetual uncertainty about where and if they can rebuild their lives are not just performative cruelty, they are counterproductive to integration and the economy. It doesn’t have to be like this - there is a better way forward rooted in Labour values that also ensures control at our borders. That’s why I will be a voice for common sense and compassion on asylum. My article for the guardian here: https://t.co/ElrKwEK5xX

Less than a week ago, the PM warned about rising racist and divisive rhetoric.
Yet the government’s focus on asylum and immigration — while urgent issues like child poverty need their focus — risks fuelling that very division.
My comment on today's briefing👇
We're in Newcastle with PMUK's Ian Gregg - former chairman of Greggs.
Speaking in a personal capacity, he said: "We hope the Chancellor uses this Budget to raise taxes on the wealthiest people first - who can most afford it - instead of ordinary people who can’t."

Use of wood-burning stoves and fires in homes is mostly unnecessary and their toxic pollution costs the NHS millions

Endless deregulation for short-term "growth" only serves the rich and powerful.
Nature, local democracy and affordable homes come second to their profits.
We need well-planned council housing to raise living standards while cherishing not trashing nature.
