Meniscus root tears are important to recognize and address.
Unfortunately, the natural history of a medial meniscus root tear can be seen in this patient when left untreated, with rapid progression of medial arthritis.

@NorthumbriaOrth @baskonline @willfishley Awesome work @willfishley I look forward to further improvements to our arthroplasty pathway and physio provision to continue to improve our patient experience and ability to facilitate daycase surgery for patients in Northumbria.
.@Radiolab and @latifnasser shedding light on the racket of scientific publishing, the lack of access to often government funded scientific research, and the amazing invaluable @scihub. Can not recommend enough.

NHS nurses hold the hands, tend the wounds, save the lives, wash the dead. They comfort us, console us, diagnose us, save us. They toil & smile & endlessly care.
Not a single NHS nurse wants to strike tomorrow. They’re desperate.
Please show NHS nurses some love. Please RT 💙
Congratulations to our consultant orthopaedic surgeon @timpetheram on winning the @bota_uk national trainer of the year! 🏆🥇
Here at @NorthumbriaNHS we pride ourselves on providing first class patient care and surgical training. A huge accolade for a phenomenal surgeon!! 👏👏
@bellkneesurgeon Great thread, thanks. the thing I have taken home about these entrapped gutter fragments is that they often give a more ‘arthritic’ type symptom pattern with constant pain rather than the more common intermittent sharp pains on twisting and deep flexion seen from standard tears.
What happens when the meniscus gets detached from the bone? The meniscus no longer works as a shock absorber as it is pushed away from the joint (extrusion). This is why it is important to repair Root Tears #savethemeniscus
@deboraheastwood It is happening everywhere. Eg calls to potential candidates’ home deaneries and trainers asking what their home situation is, if they have young kids, what their partners do. The inference is if you have young kids and a working partner you’ll be less invested in their job. 🙄
The leaky orthopaedic surgical training pathway for women… I’ve often wondered what the rate of drop off is at fellowship level? Most fellowship jobs are only offered as fulltime and I have witnessed a lot of bias against employing female fellows with young children. 🧐
@TomWalshaw Fellowship can be a brilliant opportunity to bring new techniques, skills and perspectives back home, I don’t dispute that. I just wonder if some nationally sponsored posts with a national recruitment process like they have for the TIGS might help make things a bit fairer.
@TomWalshaw Certainly true that orthopaedic training in other countries can be done very differently, I understand speciality training starts very soon after medical school in some countries e.g. New Zealand which must surely help streamline training.
