@SMcfarnell That question is extremely difficult, it points to the mind-body problem. Feelings play a big role in thinking, in the sense of interoception and assessing/evaluating. There would be no thoughts without feelings. But we might have had raw affects before thoughts

@JonathanShedler Another example is grief. So many ppl in that situation are not in a position to even consider the question of what they want or whether they want to change. They are just deeply in pain after loss and need to talk to someone.
@JonathanShedler Many ppl seek therapy while they are going through crisis, trauma reactions, or big life transitions. They don’t even know if change is possible or if they want it, they just desperately need a safe and supportive relationship where they can be listened to. Eg postpartum mothers
