I've never understood the "intent doesn't matter" viewpoint. I *totally* get the point that someone is hurt no matter what your intent, and apology is almost always called for. But for me, it makes a HUGE difference when I learn that I mistook their intent. 1/3

So yeah. For me, if someone wants to apologize and then explain their intent, I'm all ears.

There are obviously cases where people's past actions make them lose this benefit of the doubt.

We ALL frequently mistake each other's intent, especially when we're neurodivergent, and if I know that someone meant something completely different and didn't intend to hurt me, it takes a huge weight off my heart. In most cases, it erases the hurt entirely! 2/3
