After testing everything from 8,500 to 15,000 stars, 7,500 turned out to be the largest version that actually loaded cleanly and held stable.

So Abyssal Expanse is not just big for the sake of being big. It is the biggest version of the concept that survived both contact with the game engine and my PC not impersonating a BBQ.
