Canadian Telecommunications Association welcomes federal legislation encouraging tougher sentences for crimes against essential infrastructure and retail theft

Copper theft is a growing threat.
Repeat offenders are targeting critical infrastructure, such as telecommunications facilities, hoping to profit from the rising value of copper.
By doing so, these thugs cause network outages that put public safety at risk by disrupting access to emergency services.
These criminals are often only charged with minor theft that fail to reflect the true scale of the damage caused.
As a result, offenders face little consequences and continue to reoffend.
Copper wire theft across Canada is cutting off phone & internet access, including 911. This is not a victimless crime. It disrupts essential services & puts lives at risk.

Theft and vandalism of telecom infrastructure is more than just property damage—it disrupts service and endangers public safety.

A CRTC decision is putting the brakes on building critical fibre networks.
The Federal Cabinet can unlock billions in private-sector network investment by overturning the decision.
It’s time to build, connect and grow Canada.
National Indigenous Connectivity Inc., an organization that advocates for high-speed internet access in rural and remote First Nations, is concerned the CRTC wholesale access decision will negatively impact investment and connectivity in First Nation communities.

Please see statement from Robert Malcolmson, Chief Legal and Regulatory Officer for Bell, on how the CRTC’s decision to allow Canada’s large telecommunications companies to resell services on each other’s fibre networks will continue to hurt investment in Canada. https://t.co/VtcnBLIhV3
We can’t build a stronger, more connected Canada by encouraging builders to stop building. That is why Bell, Rogers, and TELUS should be prohibited from operating as resellers on the networks of others.
