@64thNWestern@CortesSteve Really bad political corruption in the Hts when I lived there '88 to '93. Our house was robbed and my mom's jewelry stolen. Found some of it at a local pawn shop in the Hts. Told the police. Mom's jewelry suddenly vanished from pawn shop less than 2 hrs later. Cops were in on it.
@Super70sSports I was born in '76, so I'm the toddler who has wandered unattended off the edge of the picture while Uncle Jerry is watching the stunt show.
@MelvinP03423795@JackPosobiec Pick your wintertime poison: sunset at 4 pm with Standard Time, or no sunrise until 8am with year-round Daylight Savings.
@VitaminVVisions@Super70sSports I had a similar experience in the hard sciences vs education. The guys with Ph.D.s in applied math, astrophysics, or computer science were overwhelmingly "Please, just call me Steve!" kinds of guys, whereas the education professors were usually "That's 'Doctor' Gwen to you!"
@KurtSchlichter Might not be that weird. A mathematician I knew told me that to get his Ph.D, he had to demonstrate that he could read older math publications written in both Latin and one other language (usually either French, German, or Russian) well enough to explain them in English.

Yeah, I know, I'm "that" guy. I'm a retired teacher, and the "Ackshually..." habit is hard to break when you were literally paid to be that way for decades.
@holyfuqbud@GTAVI_Countdown Southern Lights. Aurora Australis. Same phenomena, but at the opposite pole. (South is "up" in this particular photo; that big landmaas is Africa upside-down.)
@ManaByte I was in 4th grade at a K-8 Catholic elementary in suburban Chicago when it happened. Our class didn't watch it live, but others in our school did. I first heard about it from my friends during lunch about an hour after it happened. I didn't even believe it at first.
@SLMcEvil@ronsterd89 She's not kidding. If you like guacamole but think plain avocados are too bland, then start adding the ingredients for guac until you get to something you like. Adding dashes of pepper, garlic, and lime juice worked like a charm for me.
@EuropaActual@VladTheInflator From my personal experience in the area, the market values in those 3 Florida cities would have peaked around Q1 or Q2 of 2023.
@JohnFKenne49828@BillKrackman Not everything was cheap, but a lot of casinos had a loss-leader gimmick to draw people in. When I first went in '97, Binion's still offered a complete steak dinner for under $5. Things have been really screwed up since reopening after Covid.
@Joeinblack@Matt_Pinner Born in '76, spent most of the 1980s as a kid in the suburban town of Highland, Indiana. It was quiet, safe, and we didn't have the kind of adults who would call the police to report "unattended children" whenever she saw a couple of 10-year-olds fishing in the pond at the park.
