One uncomfortable truth that nobody wants to talk about is that the quality of players has declined globally. Not to downplay Africa's achievements, but the regular power houses also don't have as much star quality as they used to. Look at the lineups of nations like Germany, Spain, Brazil, etc. Mostly average players in most positions. Any fearless, organised team can go toe to toe with most European and South American teams these days.
What scares and saddens me about Remi Tinubu's "Kuli-Kulikuli and Akara" talk is not just how out-of-touch several of our leaders are.
But, how pernicious the role of aides and hangers-on around them to distract from true situation of things can be.
There is poverty in Nigeria. Endemic poverty, and it spans every single region.
Yet, what will raise millions out of poverty instantly isn't this 50k grants for kulikuli. It is serious "back-crouched, hands-on-plough" laser focus on amenities.
Affordable and reliable Electricity alone will drive millions out of poverty, without having to spend these ridiculous amounts to petty traders on kulikuli.
It is interesting that every single thing Remi mentioned was one that avoided electricity. Frying grounded beans using firewood, or moulding groundnuts into kulikuli to sell.
This analogy is important because by targeting that, we fail to see where the problem really lies.
Olusegun Obasanjo was terrible at many things. But what his government understood was the imperative of a middle class.
In 2001, after Obasanjo reformed telecoms sector, the Nigerian economy grew instantly by 15% in a single year. We know many back then who had no jobs, but started getting to eat by setting up Econet and MTN stalls as they got pulled into the value-chain.
Growth in banking, telecoms, Oil&Gas and other sectors helped build many.
Teachers, civil servants, lawyers were growing into a middle-class that grew sectors like construction after collecting "Gbemu Aremu".
Buhari's policies threw teachers back into poverty.
Tinubu's policies have thrown civil servants, lawyers, academia, and several earlier middle-class into drudgery of poverty of the Abacha era.
That contraction of the Nigerian economy is why we are where we are now.
How many people have the disposable income now to be able to buy Akara consistently.
I have seen comments about engineers, doctors being trained from proceeds of Akara. But I feel people are underestimating the effect of subsidy over years.
Decades of free education, and prolonged healthcare spending by Awolowo and co, created a situation where indigent families could depend on subsidies. At least till the 90's.
Boda Gbenga whose mother hawked moin-moin went to Public schools.
Boda Fatai whose mother sold Ogi went to schools like St.Leo's.
And for someone like me, who knew the likes of Ojurayo, Abbas, Olaleye, Sofela, Abati, Manoj and co. Great teachers spread across public schools in Ogun State (for example). Public schools wasn't something to be ashamed about.
Public housing Spending also meant Rent market was not exorbitant.
From 2007-2014, Spaghetti for example was between 70-100 Naira. There were Indomie packs for 35naira.
Government handoff from these sectors has thrown millions into poverty.
Rising inflation over the last decade without attendant incomes matching it, whilst public sectors have not improved, means these "nostalgic" Akara or Kuli-kuli analogies wouldn't lift people out of poverty.
Remi Tinubu's husband insists on Sokoto-Badagry or Lagos-Calabar, gives the contracts to the Lebanese in billions of dollars and then she gives advice to Nigerians to sell kuli-kuli, after collecting 50k grants.
Remi Tinubu's husband providing electricity where rural dwellers can sleep with fans, is much more impactful than budgeting billions for mosquito nets.
Remi Tinubu's husband providing electricity for rural dwellers for example raises their ability to preserve food, solve wastages and prevent exploitation by cruel middlemen than budgeting billions for "Better-life" bowls or 50k grants she wants to gift them.

On June 11, Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff to President Bola Tinubu, issued a public disclaimer disowning the appointment of Adeniyi Adeyemi as the head of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council.
“It has come to the notice of the Federal Government of Nigeria and specifically the Office of the Chief of Staff to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR that a certain Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, under the auspices of an alleged organisation styled as the ‘Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council’ is portraying himself to the general public as having been appointed by my office,” Gbajabiamila said.

I will conclude with one narration.
One day a man came to Abdullah Ibn Umar and asked him if mosquitos blood is pure or not, like if mosquitos blood stained one’s cloth, can it be used to pray or not.
And Abdullah Ibn Umar asked him “Where are you from?” the man responded “I am from Iraq” Abdullah Ibn Umar responded “You are asking about the blood of misquotes when the blood of grandson of the prophet was spilled in your country”.
May Allah be pleased with Hussein and the martyrs of Karbala and unite us with them on the day of judgement.
Amin.
Mind you, unanimously, the scholars of Sunnah said we Muslims don’t have right to abuse anyone in this battle, that we are not up to them in faith or rank in the sight of Allah. And that only Allah knows how He will judge them.
