A Japanese teacher creates a new piece of artwork for his students every day, only to erase it once the school day ends.

Hirotaka Hamasaki, a high school art teacher in Nara, Japan, creates elaborate chalk masterpieces on his classroom blackboard. Using colored chalk, he recreates iconic Western paintings and popular anime scenes, giving his students a new surprise each morning.

His highly detailed drawings can take hours to complete, but they are never meant to last. At the end of each school day, Hamasaki erases the artwork, using its temporary nature to teach his students about appreciating the present moment and finding beauty in things that don’t last.

A major study from Harvard Medical School indicates that taxi and ambulance drivers exhibit the lowest rates of death from Alzheimer disease among hundreds of occupations. Researchers suggest that the constant demands of spatial navigation in these roles may help safeguard the brain against cognitive decline.

The analysis examined death certificates from nearly nine million Americans spanning 443 different jobs.

After accounting for age and other demographic variables ambulance drivers showed only 0.91 percent of deaths linked to Alzheimer disease while taxi drivers recorded 1.03 percent. These figures stand significantly below the national average.

Notably the protective effect was not observed in other transportation professions such as bus drivers or pilots who often follow fixed repetitive routes.

Experts point to the hippocampus the brain structure crucial for spatial memory and navigation as a likely explanation. This region is among the first to deteriorate in Alzheimer disease. Unlike drivers on predetermined paths taxi and ambulance operators continuously adapt to dynamic routes solve navigational problems in real time and manage complex environments. Such ongoing cognitive engagement is believed to foster greater cognitive reserve by strengthening hippocampal function.

While the observational nature of the research does not establish direct causation the results provide compelling evidence that regular mentally demanding navigation tasks could contribute meaningfully to reducing the risk of severe cognitive impairment.

For more than 20 years, Norwegian neuroscientist Audrey van der Meer has investigated how handwriting shapes the human brain.

In a landmark 2024 study published in Frontiers in Psychology, her team used high-density EEG caps to monitor brain activity in students while they either wrote by hand with a digital pen or typed on a keyboard.

The difference was dramatic. Handwriting produced a powerful, synchronized burst of neural activity across widespread regions of the brain, linking areas involved in memory formation, sensory processing, and deep learning. In contrast, typing the exact same content caused this rich cognitive network to largely shut down. Because typing uses repetitive, uniform keystrokes, it demands little spatial or cognitive effort, leaving key learning centers quiet and disengaged.

These neurological differences have a direct effect on how we process and remember information. Earlier research by Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer at Princeton University reached similar conclusions. Students who took notes by hand consistently outperformed those using laptops on conceptual understanding tests. Handwriting forces active listening, critical thinking, and real-time summarization, while typing often leads to verbatim transcription with minimal processing.

Our brains function as part of an embodied biological system. Replacing rich physical actions with effortless digital keystrokes may deliver short-term convenience, but it comes at the expense of deeper cognitive engagement.

The solution is simple and timeless: pick up a pen.
