So here is my considered opinion on this….its a pile of shit. That’s not just a gut reaction….its for a number of reasons.
- artistically it’s just not very good. It’s cartoonish, simple, doesn’t require much talent (like a lot of “art” nowadays) and very much resembles something an A level art student would be asked to knock up as a bit of course work.
- it’s being given a depth of meaning it just doesn’t have. The artists explanation of what it stands for is trite nonsense. It’s basically “woman with fat arse”.
- it’s totally out of place with its surroundings . The 4th plinth in Trafalgar Square has sadly become a place for trends and agendas to be pushed rather than actually artistic talent and merit to be displayed.
- The artist isn’t even English/British, she’s American.
- It wasn’t even made in this country, it was made in Italy and shipped here.

It’s emblematic of everything going wrong in the western world. It’s the dumbing down of culture, the celebration of a fad, a trendy idea over actual skill or talent.

How can it be true that sculptures from 3/4/5/600 years ago were a million times more talented and skilled and produced FAR more beautiful and complex works of art literally with chisels and basic tools than artists today with 3d design software, high powered tools and latest cutting and shaping equipment. And it’s not just art, it’s everywhere. It’s music, it’s architecture, it’s almost everything that requires thought, skills, talent, dedication.

Society is being dumbed down and made LESS beautiful by technology not improved. It’s made people lazy. Lazy musicians who can create on a laptop and don’t need to improve their voice because it can be auto tuned. Lazy artists who don’t experiment and learn painting or sculpture techniques because software does it for the. Architects who value functionality and cheap costs and materials over style and beauty.

I realise I sound like an anti modernist old fart…..but I don’t give a shit because I’m 100% right and the vast majority of people would agree with me.
