It's kinda nuts to think that the best skaters drafted by the Red Wings so far this millenium are probably Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson, Larkin, Kronwall, and Franzen. And probably the only no doubt 1st line/top pair talents of those are Seider and Raymond (and maybe Ed?).
@JCSportsDetroit Blashill was the coach when Larkin was named captain. Yzerman didn't hire him. And Larkin was mad when Blashill didn't get renewed, so bringing on a new coach before Larkin was made captain would've just made Larkin mad earlier.
Hockey fans having to lowkey root for Yzerman in this situation. Because if Steve Yzerman, of all people, caves, the NHL is cooked. He's the last bastion.
players are within their rights to use the leverage afforded by their contracts (just like teams are). as a fan, i don't think the NHL will be a better place if every star just funnels themselves to one of a handful of southern market teams as soon as they have the leverage to
We keep hearing about how the Team USA guys were planning this in Milan. And I get that this is the NHL now.
But it's pretty weak that Wings fans were left wondering how the team mentally collapsed in March AGAIN, all while our captain secretly already had a foot out the door.
Larkin wants to compete, but there are plenty of competitive teams besides these three, some even more so. Like Carolina. So why only three teams?
It's always been about location, taxes, and playing with his Team USA buddies. Being competitive is just a nice bonus.

I see what this is going for, as I'd say Rui is about as good at his particular role as Stew is at his. Which is to say very good. Though trading Stew plus a draft pick for a guy that is currently a UFA plus a negative asset in DK4 is a bit odd.
Thoughts on this trade:
LAL: Rui Hachimura + Dalton Knecht
DET: Isaiah Stewart + 2nd round pick
Both teams get what they desperately need, Lakers defense - Pistons offensive creation
seems a win win to me
There may be bigger offers for Larkin than we think due to this.
If Larkin winds up going somewhere besides Minnesota, good luck to the Wild keeping QH from leaving next year.
And for TOR, Larkin could be the difference between AM staying or teaming up with Larkin elsewhere.
Elliotte says no one has spoken on the Larkin trade request. He thinks Matthew Tkachuk and Quinn Hughes changed the league by refusing to sign with their teams, then going on to find greater success. Doesn't think this will be the last trade request of the season. Larkin winning the gold could have made him want to win more, forcing this move.
There is a bit of a frosty relationship with Yzerman, and if he goes to a deeper team, he has a better chance to create an impact and win. Says the rift between Larkin and Steve is real. Says for Larkin, it's just time to move on.
Yzerman will not be backed into a corner or bullied. He has to be practical, but teams won't lowball him. Will he trade him for help now or try to grab futures and younger players to build around Mo and Lucas? Getting younger would delay the window.
Dallas, Tampa, maybe Florida, and Minnesota are the teams Elliotte is looking at.

@pucksanddreams_@CollinAshby If Larkin wants to be traded but also starts waving his NMC around to tank trades, he can just not get traded.
Yzerman could easily work with Larkin to find a competitive team that yields good returns for both sides. But if Larkin kills it, you expose him for being a cancer.
With that said, I think QH wouldn't commit to extending in Detroit because the plan was to team up with DL, jump ship if it fizzles out, and DL uses the last year of his full NTC to follow him. But when Yzerman didn't bite, DL asked out early, and QH is gonna follow him next year
Not so hot conspiracy theory: American NHL players in particular are entering their NBA super team era and are using the national team gatherings to plan team ups in large and/or tax haven markets. I have a feeling we'll see a bit of it in the coming years.

The Larkin situation has kinda felt like when you've been with someone for a while and it's time to end it. But you keep putting it off because you're dreading the breakup.
Once it ends and some time passes, you start seeing all the possibilities and how it's a good thing.
@CEtalks Lu Dort would be cool off the bench, though he's basically a defensively supercharged Javonte Green at this point. He'd have to be glued to Cade's rotation minutes because he's basically unplayable without SGA these days.
I would vastly prefer an actual shot creator.
You're Chet Holmgren. You're projected to be the next great American big man. You win a gold medal for America in FIBA U19, beating this giant French kid in the process. That kid proceeds to terrorize you for the rest of your life like he's the semi from Spielberg's film "Duel."
