Living in Mexico I’ve witnessed firsthand a troubling dynamic playing out in our city. A group of American expats, white, liberal, and politically vocal, have taken it upon themselves to occupy one of the most sacred spaces in our community. What makes this particularly galling is the response when local Mexicans respectfully asked them to relocate their protest to a more appropriate venue, like the American consulate: they were dismissed. Talked down to. Essentially told they didn’t understand what was happening in their own country.
Here’s what these expats seem to miss, Mexicans aren’t particularly moved by American political affiliations or references to the U.S. president. What they do care deeply about is their faith, their traditions, and their right to celebrate their Catholic heritage without interference in the spaces they hold sacred. Thats not ignorance. Thats a community asking for basic respect on their own soil.
