Lecturer @tudelft; Cult of Creativity (UChiP). Cultural History, STS, DH, etc. TBH this is now just where I keep track of my book press and get overwhelmed.
@kramermj Totally, me too, and I even felt trapped in it. At its best it's "dialectical thinking" but normally it just ends up being "it's both" (as if the reactionary/progressive dichotomy is an actual thing)....
@kramermj That said, I actually tried (but obviously not hard enough) to make it clear "creativity" only *appeared* to resolve contradictions, but left the essential political economic problems in place. In this sense I'm simply in that old tradition of "why no socialism in America."
@kramermj ... I do think with anything big and cultural (diffused, shared) be it the Idea of Creativity or the Work Ethic, their power in the world and as historiographical topics are in their ability to play for both teams, to resolve contradictions, etc., so it's sort of inevitable...

"The concept’s opaqueness allowed users to commit neither to the elites that lauded its virtues nor to the egalitarian sensibilities that insisted creativity was a latent trait evenly distributed."

Hi @AllusionistShow@HelenZaltzman 👋 I’ve got an episode I’d like to pitch. Is there somewhere I can reach you? A suggestion box nailed to a tree some place, perhaps?
I'm so pleased to have this excerpt from The Cult of Creativity reprinted in Behavioral Scientist, and to reach some of the communities whose history I write about.

@AnneHummert ...I hope you enjoy the book! But of course if you have quibbles with my treatment of the creative revolution, or of the proto-branded content in Chapter 8, bring 'em on.
@AnneHummert This is fabulous! I love the "better living through chemistry" bit, and of course that you saw, more than twenty years before I did, that "creativity" itself came to be seen as the industry's real product.
