After the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942, around 45,000 Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army were taken prisoner by the Japanese. Around 20,000 initially agreed to join the force that became the Indian National Army (INA) under Captain Mohan Singh and the number soon grew to 48,000.
With many happily assuming the role of camp guards of the many POW camps which housed British, Australian, Dutch and New Zealanders.
