Hibs, meanwhile, returned to the UEFA Cup in 1992/93 and faced Belgian opposition again in the shape of Anderlecht. Liège pair De Sart & Danny Boffin had transferred to Anderlecht in the meantime and helped knock Hibs out of Europe for the second time in three years.

🧵Today in 1989: 2,000 Hibs fans were in Belgium for the second leg of a UEFA Cup second-round match against RFC Liège at the Stade Vélodrome de Rocourt. Jean-François De Sart's 40yd goal in extra time was enough to send the Belgians through after two goalless 90 minutes.

After seeing off Hibs, Liège knocked out Rapid Wien in the third round, winning 3-2 on aggregate, before losing 4-3 to Werder Bremen in the quarter-finals. It was their last foray into continental football as their stadium was sold and they dropped down the divisions.

Today in 1895: Hibs record a 7-2 victory over Third Lanark at the original Cathkin Park.

William Smith (front row second right) scored four. The Bridgeton-born forward later played for Newcastle and Swindon Town before returning to work in Glasgow's shipyards.

Today in 1942: Hibs defeated Third Lanark 8-2 in a Summer Cup tie 2R 1st leg match at Easter Road - Willie McCartney's side were 4-0 up after 15 mins.

Brentford's Coatbridge-born Joe Crozier guested in goals for Hibs & an 18yo Gordon Smith (front row, far left) scored twice.

📰Today in 1894, a letter published in the 𝘚𝘤𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘦 makes claims of gerrymandering and calls for league reconstruction after Division Two champions Hibs failed to win promotion to Division One - with third-placed Clyde elected to the top flight instead.

Today in 1942 - Hibs beat Clyde 2-0 at Shawfield in the 1st round, 2nd leg of the Summer Cup, with goals from Bobby Combe & Sammy Kean giving them a 4-1 aggregate victory.

Hibs reached the final, drawing 0-0 with Rangers, with the Ibrox side winning the trophy after a coin toss.

Played 333 times for Hibs between 1918-29 & served in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders during WWI.
Was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal.
Died October 1947 aged 55.
