“MAID expansion advocates have wrongly appropriated the abortion debate” commentary w @igrantubc on distorted invoking of Canada’s history around abortion by DwD Daphne Gilbert; a desperate attempt to skew democratic process via Senate https://t.co/PDK9mSx8mx via @thehilltimes
This morning, Senators @StanKutcher @SenatorWallin @SenatriceMegie hosted a press conference. They, being a minority, argued that Canada is “ready” for MAiD for mental illness. While I disagree with them, I am infuriated by their use of pinkwashing so will focus on that🧵
State-endorse, state-sponsored assisted suicide in a coercive climate, where people are under-valued, under-supported, and left to fend for themselves is cruel. Leave me, and my communities out of it.
"Canada’s plan to expand (MAiD) for those with mental illnesses is a profound and dangerous shift in our societal values, one that risks reinforcing deep-seated ableist beliefs and attitudes. We must never go down this path." @kurtgoddard

Important stats about MAiD in Canada - from 2022 - the first full year that assisted suicide was made available to suffering people with disabilities. Parliamentarians are debating “readiness” for MAiD for mental illness. Read carefully. This is our current reality.
"Students with an intellectual disability face the same problems I do, but they can face different barriers... Remove barriers to mental well-being and mental health care... make campus support accessible. Mental health is a universal human right." - Brooklin
With today being #WorldMentalHealthDay, our very own Brooklin wrote a blog about her experience with mental health in university, and the different barriers that students with an intellectual disabilities face.

@JessicaL_2022@DisabledAcadem Finding other disabled students and/or people researching disability. And how hard it would be to find employment as a disabled person even with a degree.
These are my friends, mentors, and colleagues.
Nobody should be talked down to like this, no matter the subject matter. But this is especially true when people are engaging in democratic processes to tell Parliamentarians about how laws oppress them.

What's going on with Canada's MAiD program? Let's ask the physicians in charge.
This piece took a long time to report. I interviewed 50+ people. I went over two years of training seminars. And it turns out, MAiD in Canada is seriously flawed https://t.co/wdl21N0ucN
"In my view, the Expert Panel on MAID and Mental Illness did not meaningfully deliver on its responsibilities."
Ellen resigned from the federal expert panel on #MAiD because they would not consider the safeguards necessary to ensure #pwd and/or mental illness are protected.
