@davidfrum Correct. Canada produces around 600,000 bbls of diesel per day. Trump’s deal represents about 2,200,000 bbls, or about 3-4 days of Canadian production.
So let’s bypass our Russia sanctions and give the enemy $300 million, rather than buying more efficiently from our allies.
Another way to think about Trump announcement today: If he increased US diesel imports from Canada by 4%, he would gain as much fuel as from this Russia deal. But the Canadians are global super-villains, so who wants to buy from them when you could enrich Putin instead?
@jmbprime Its pretty simple, the administration does not want the United States to have close relationship with Canada.
Its the classic approach denegrate and vilify your enemy, make them other. Classic fascist approach.
Yesterday the President revealed the secret of national wealth. “We don’t need their product. So if we cut off trade with that country, we just made $40 billion. You do a few countries like that, and we become a big money machine.” It is a lovely theory, provided you have never bought anything in your life.
Follow the logic and it only gets better. Stop importing aluminium and you have saved a fortune, plus you no longer need to make cars or aircraft, which saves even more. Stop buying gallium and germanium and the chip factories can close, which frees up the electricity you were about to stop buying anyway. Every cancelled purchase is a profit.
Do a few countries like that, he says, and the machine hums. What it actually produces is emptier shelves, dearer everything, and a superpower proudly announcing it has never been richer, having bought, and built, nothing at all.
He is the president of The United States of America.
"Mark Carney and the Canadian government can sign any number of trade agreements, but you can't change what's in the heart of Canadians right now." The damage has been done, and Canadian consumers are refusing anything to do with the U.S.A.

With elections around the corner, it's time for political leaders to hit reset on the alcohol escalator tax set to rise again on April 1st. Annual tax hikes limit funds that could be used for expansion, innovation, and in 2025—survival. #TaxReform#EconomicGrowth#SupportBusiness
In 1890, the Tariff Act came into place in the United States. It placed tariffs on imports of up to 50%.
While touted as a way to build American industry, there was also the hope it would force an annexation of Canada. It backfired.
Let's learn more.
