"People here always go on about the fresh face female graduates with no experience of the real world, but these can sometimes be the most committed and principled individuals you could get as a probation officer." 2/2
Britain’s prison system is brutal and broken. Why does reforming it seem so impossible? | Simon Jenkins | The Guardian. I’m glad Simon Jenkins has been following the POA line of calling for a Royal Commission. Steve Gillan Gen Sec. https://t.co/cng1qBiKzd
Failing that, we must have change. In order for this to happen we should also cull the manifestly useless, and blind layers of HMPPS oversight and put the money saved into safe conditions for front line staff, an attractive vocation and decent, purposeful custody . Ends 18/
I work for the civil service, we're all underpaid, we all have some extremely important aspect of society in our control, every department is one nervous breakdown from going under and life would be dystopia without us, you fuckers have no idea.
Governors have it within their gift to run safe regimes without putting their careers at risk . The problem is they don’t want to because they refuse to listen . Unlock manageable numbers of prisoners based on your staffing levels. Stop trying to do everything with no staff.
Our members don’t recruit prison officers, they don’t manage FM contracts, they don’t have HR or Finance: successive governments and ministers have allowed and overseen the steady decline of the Prison Service, through contracting out services and functional leadership @MoJGovUK
It is not for ministers to ‘get a grip’ it is for ministers to insist that those they have appointed to run HMPPS ‘get a grip’, hold them accountable and if necessary replace them. There has been a decade of decline here which is reflective of most of the rest of the estate.
"The centralisation of recruitment and prescriptive, limiting interviews are resulting in more staff than ever before being appointed, who are not suitable or interested in the job."
🚨 | BREAKING: Rishi Sunak has been accused of wiping more than 6,000 unassessed asylum claims from the system to fulfil his pledge to clear the backlog

@NotThatBigIan A 2,000 bed ‘resettlement’ prison is a nonsense and a contradiction in terms. You resettle in small units, in urban areas close to where you came from and go back to. This is a cheap warehouse, pure and simple.
🧵Ever wondered how @MetPoliceUK officers feel about Baroness Casey's review into misogyny, racism + homophobia in policing?
Fortunately, many serving cops shared their opinions via the force's intranet.
Here's a thread of their comments.🍎

A question for those #police officers and former officers supporting routine carrying of forearms by police in England and Wales. You confident in the worst officer you ever served with (there is 'the one', there is always 'the one') having a loaded sidearm on patrol with you?
These are places holding terrorists & v. dangerous ppl. You might ask:
1. Why does it take a random inspection to expose squalor?
2. What's the point of well paid, apparently useless HQ corporate oversight?
3. What more serious problems could it signify?

This is not an overcrowded, decaying,Victorian warehouse. It is modern, high spec, well-resourced with the highest staff-prisoner ratio in the system. Why did it take @HMIPrisonsnews to find out it was filthy and badly run? https://t.co/0WkbBxzaaf
