Jean-Jacques Dessalines led armies to defeat France to become the first free colonial society. It was the greatest slave uprising since Spartacus.

It was a powerful reminder that Black liberation Could be achieved.

New Orleans in the 1960s was sharply divided over the practice of segregation, and the "Citizens’ Council of Greater New Orleans" advocated some pretty silly stuff, including a protest against black musicians.

The Christmas Rebellion of 60,000 enslaved Africans in Jamaica on Christmas Day 1831, was the largest uprising in the history of the British West Indies. It led to the abolition of slavery in 1833 and full emancipation in 1838.
