Everything I have achieved today is all because of my Mom and Dad… (Mumma would be so happy and blessing me from heavens) thank you @HurunReportInd@HurunIndia and @CandereByKalyan for acknowledging that what I do is extraordinary in today’s time ❤️ along with other women entrepreneurs you awarded last night.
And I also dedicate any achievement to my viewers. They have continuously trusted me and it couldn’t have been possible without their support
Microsoft’s Soft Layoff: Simple Explanation
Microsoft is giving about 60,000 employees a chance to leave the company with money and support. This is not a forced firing. It is a voluntary exit offer, often called a “soft layoff.” The company wants fewer people so it can spend more on artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
What Is Happening?
Microsoft announced the offer in late October 2026. It is open to roughly 60,000 workers out of its total 223,000 employees. That is about one-quarter of the company
People who accept the offer will leave by the end of 2026. Microsoft is not forcing anyone out. Employees choose for themselves.
Who Can Take the Offer?
The offer is only for workers in four countries: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and India.
It covers employees up to a certain level inside the company. This includes many managers and some vice presidents, but not the highest executives.
Not every team is included. The company decides which groups can take part based on its needs.
Teams That Are Usually Included
- Xbox (gaming)
- Windows
- Copilot and some AI product teams
- Finance and human resources in some cases
Teams That Are Usually Left Out
- Sales
- Marketing
- Cybersecurity
- Data centers
- Some engineering groups
This means the company is mainly protecting roles that bring in money or keep systems running. Product and support roles are more open to exits.
What Do Employees Get If They Leave?
If someone accepts the offer, they receive Microsoft’s normal severance package. This includes:
- Money based on how long they worked and their job level
- Some stock that continues to vest
- Health insurance for a limited time
- Help with finding a new job
There is no extra bonus on top of the normal package. It is not as generous as an earlier retirement offer Microsoft made earlier in 2026
How Long Do People Have to Decide?
Employees must decide by the first week of December 2026. Those who say yes will leave on December 31, 2026. The window is short so people make a quick choice.
Why Is Microsoft Doing This?
Microsoft is spending huge amounts of money on AI. It is building data centers, buying computer chips, and developing AI tools. Some reports put the spending near $175 billion this year
Fewer employees means lower salary costs. The company can then put more money into AI projects. It has already cut thousands of jobs earlier in 2025 and 2026 through regular layoffs and a smaller voluntary retirement program.
In short, the company is resizing its workforce while betting heavily on AI.
What Happened Before This?
Microsoft has reduced its staff several times recently:
- About 15,000 jobs were cut in 2025.
- In spring 2026, it offered a voluntary retirement package to about 8,750 older U.S. workers. More than 30 percent took it.
- In July 2026, it cut about 4,800 jobs, with many of them in the Xbox gaming division.
The new offer is larger and aimed at a wider group of younger employees.
What Does This Mean for Workers?
The choice is real, but the pressure can be felt. When a whole team is told the company is offering exits, some people worry that staying may not be safe later. Visa holders may face extra uncertainty because the company has not clearly said how it will help with immigration issues.
Microsoft still says it is hiring in important areas and moving some people to new roles inside the company. Not everyone who is eligible is expected to leave. The company thinks fewer people will accept this time because the package is not extra-sweetened and the workers are younger.
Bottom Line
This is Microsoft’s way of shrinking its workforce without the bad publicity of mass firings. It gives some employees a paid way out while the company pours money into AI. Whether the AI bet pays off enough to justify the cuts is still unknown. For now, the soft layoff is one more step in a bigger effort to control costs.
