Reading the board: who should stay, and who may come.
A post is going around: "Musk says Italians should stay in Italy and the Japanese in Japan. Then why is this South African in America?"
He never said it. In Rome in 2023, he said he did not want Italy or Japan to disappear as cultures, and that immigration is not the answer to population decline.
So set the fake quote down. The real question is still on the board.
Long ago, King Hui of Liang asked Mencius why his population would not grow, though he cared for his people more than his neighbors did.
Mencius answered: rule with benevolence, and people from all under heaven will come to you.
Confucius said it shorter: make those near you happy, and those far away will come.
In this old view, people moving toward a country are not a threat. They are a verdict on how that country treats people.
A young man left South Africa, passed through Canada, and chose America. That says something good about America.
The real question for any nation is not how to keep people where they were born.
It is why anyone would want to come, or to stay.
When the young start leaving, the verdict is already in.
Last night, Macron played a two-sided move. Hard on the rioters. Gentle with the marchers, whose demands he called "legitimate." He is trying to hold the center while both edges pull.
But watch the stones, not the speech.
What was placed at once: prefects may now ban gatherings, and rioters will be prosecuted.
What the students got: understanding. Nothing yet they can hold in their hands.
Now look at the ashes of Limoges. Every side has picked them up. For the president, they mean order. For Le Pen, who leads the polls for April, they mean weakness. For the left and the Greens, they mean police excess.
The fire has become a stone in everyone's hand for 2027.
Everyone's but one group: the high school students who placed the first stone in September, asking for teachers and schools that are not falling apart.
They are no longer on the board.
Confucius said: hear the words, then watch the deeds. I am watching.
In Go, there is a move that fills your own last breathing space. Your stones die by your own hand.
Half a million marched for teachers and fair prices.
A masked few burned Limoges' 143-year-old city hall.
Now France talks only about the fire.
Who did that move serve?
Mencius: the people matter most, the state next, the ruler least.
France's teenagers asked for teachers. They got police lines.
Twenty-four centuries later, the order is still being read backwards.
Absolute state of this.
Young lad purchases a baseball bat in "Modern England".
As soon as he leaves the store, police grab him for "carrying a weapon".
The bat is literally still in it's plastic covering.

Everyone surprised by Messi’s form at the World Cup clearly didn’t watch him in the MLS months earlier.
He’s been moving like this all season, and at 38/39 years old, it makes absolutely no sense.
