I think there is a middle ground here. The reality is canopy is needed to prevent suburbs and cities from becoming paved heat islands, and near waterways their function is even greater. Not everyone understands the role trees play in their town, or how it affects how light, water and wind move through their and their neighbor’s property. Not all know what tree diseases are prevalent in their neighborhood, or the best native trees, most invasive trees etc. It is also true some residents clear cut, some cut actively diseased trees at the wrong time of year-oak wilt-endangering neighbor’s trees. This can wipe out an old growth tree community. I think the role of a town arborist is to teach folks their options and try to maintain a healthy % canopy in a community. I don’t think it should be a money-making/tax-like proposition for a village/town but have no problem with an easy permit and replacement strategy especially near waterways. There is the “tragedy of the commons” in biology, and we can all destroy a shared resource if we each act only in self interest. And I say that as an Ayn Rand fangirl. There is such a thing as a greater good….

Let’s be honest, U.S. has this too though it is lower, has had it since 2008. These are evil IMHO. Does being in a trust and the assets staying in Canada change anything?
