Children growing up in cities often have fewer encounters with environmental microbes, especially when most of their time is spent indoors.
A Finnish proof-of-principle study tested a simple idea: adding forest soil to entrance rugs inside urban homes.
Researchers found that this increased the presence of forest-associated bacteria in indoor air, especially near the rugs at infants’ breathing height. Some changes were linked to microbial patterns associated with lower asthma risk, though the researchers note that more studies are needed to confirm health benefits.
It is an early but important reminder: microbial diversity in the environment can play a role in human wellbeing.

Some of the most important processes shaping Earth’s climate happen at a microscopic scale. Soil microbes break down organic matter, recycle nutrients, and help regulate the movement of carbon through ecosystems.
The Save Soil movement is working to support policies that increase organic content in soil. Healthier soil supports richer microbial life, which strengthens natural carbon cycles and improves the soil’s ability to store carbon.

What if music could reconnect us with the earth? 🎶
In this collaboration, composer and producer Ryan Whitewolf, founder of the Voice of the Earth Foundation, joins Ashaninka singer Raine Piyako, Vice-President of the Yorenka Tasorentsi Institute in the Amazon.
Voices of the Earth is a project that brings ancestral Indigenous songs together with symphonic music to amplify traditional wisdom and inspire a deeper connection with nature.
Together they create a powerful musical experience - a reminder of humanity’s deep bond with soil, forests and the living planet.
For Indigenous cultures, music is not entertainment.
It is a way of listening to the living world.
And remembering that we are part of it.
