The Intermediate students have been working hard on creating a bulletin board to showcase prominent figures and their own learning throughout Black History Month. Even though February has come to an end, our learning has not. They recognize the importance of continuing to learn.

Great Q & A session with our former @HighParkSarnia Panthers. They did a great job answering questions from our Intermediates about academics, clubs, sports, and general GLSS inquiries. They did a great job getting them excited for high school! @great_lakesss

The students used the flyer, calculated tax, and figured out what they could purchase within their budget, all while giving back to their community! It was a wonderful day watching our Panthers excitedly give back, purchasing the most needed items for the @theinnsarnia @LKelempro

The Intermediate High Park students decided to use part of their popcorn proceeds to give back to their community. Thank you to Kyle’s No Frills for allowing the students to practice their financial literacy learning, life skills and build local community relationships!

So much growth through our language centres this year! The students love that our centres involve current events and topics. During November, we’ve been continuing with Treaty Week activities, Remembrance Day, and have now incorporated Persuasive Writing and Financial Literacy.

We are so proud of our Intermediate students this week. They have been having meaningful conversations during our Truth and Reconciliation language centres. Here, they are reflecting the Calls to Action, what reconciliation truly means, & using read alouds to reflect on stories.

One of our favourite beginning of the year tasks! The students are determined and used collaboration and a growth mindset to succeed in this Nrich Math Challenge. We’ve been talking about The Importance of Struggle using videos from @joboaler.

We placed a garbage can at the front and gave bonuses to those who got their piece of paper in from their seat. People near the garbage had an advantage. The closer you were to the can, the better your odds. This lead to a powerful discussion about equity/equality and privilege.

A very successful first intermediate economy auction! Since learning about budgeting, taxes, loans and finances, students are learning the importance (and difficulties) of financial planning and sticking with a budget.

The bank is open (socially distanced of course)! We’ve combined financial literacy with our intermediate Classroom Economy and our bankers did a fantastic job of calculating fines, taxes, withdrawals and bonuses while depositing students “paychecks”.

One of our favourites! The students used “cheez-its” as a math tool to understand what a square root is and where it comes from! They realized quickly certain amounts resulted in rectangles, not squares and therefore did not have a whole number as a root. #LKDSB

We have been learning about various Indigenous artists. We started with an Indigenous Group of 7 and are recreating pieces and researching the meaning behind the art. Here are some our Norval Morrisseau pieces, who was known as “The Picasso of the North”. @LKelempro @LKDSB

Math incorporated in our Terry Fox run! We had wonderings about heart rates, beats per minute, and changes. We recorded our heart rate before, during and after our laps. Showing our findings through line graphs showed our rate changes and answer our wonderings! #LKDSB @LKelempro
