As part of IHROC 2026, we are developing a new High-Rise Mayday and Near-Miss Initiative.
We are looking for firefighters, officers, instructors, and departments who are willing to share a short 10-minute recorded presentation about a high-rise Mayday, [email protected]
Part of the standpipe system at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, along with a firefighting cache.
Preparation matters.
In high-rise and complex buildings, firefighting success starts long before the line is stretched.

St. Paul’s Cathedral in London was something special.
At 365 feet / 111 metres tall, I consider it a high-rise building.
For 250 years, St. Paul’s was the tallest building in London.
Long before modern elevators, fire pumps, standpipes, radio systems, or engineered smoke control

I finally had the opportunity to meet Joseph Warwick in person.
Joseph is an academic producing important research that will help advance firefighting operations in tall buildings. His work contributes to the realities firefighters face in complex vertical environments.
Sitting with a great group of international firefighters, sharing stories, lessons learned, and a few laughs after a full day of high-rise firefighting discussions.
This crew introduced me to something called “splitting the G.”

Honoured to be signing The Book of Search with my two new firefighter friends from the Canary Islands.
