CRIME BRANCH’S INITIAL PROBE FINDS NO CONCRETE EVIDENCE OF PROF. DOOLLA’S ROLE IN ABETMENT TO SUICIDE

Mumbai Police sources say the Crime Branch’s preliminary investigation has so far not found concrete evidence establishing Professor Suryanarayana Doolla’s role in abetment to suicide.

Investigators have also not found eyewitness confirmation of any casteist remarks allegedly made against Sahil Wakode.

The allegations of caste-based remarks were made by Sahil’s parents in their complaint, and remain part of the ongoing investigation.

According to police sources, some eyewitnesses told investigators that Professor Doolla was assigned examination-supervision duty on the day of the incident.

During the examination, Doolla allegedly noticed Sahil with a mobile phone and subsequently asked him to step outside the classroom.

Sahil was then taken to the Head of Department, where another professor was also present, according to the statements recorded by police.

The Crime Branch has questioned not only Professor Doolla but also the two other professors who were present during the subsequent interaction.

CCTV footage from the examination hall and campus is also being examined as investigators reconstruct the sequence of events.

The Crime Branch has maintained that the investigation is still at an early stage and a detailed probe is underway.

No final conclusion has been reached regarding the allegations, and investigators are examining all available evidence before determining responsibility.

A student at IIT Bombay dies by suicide.

Outrage against the IIT admin.

IIT clarifies that the student was caught using ChatGPT for answers during an exam, was counselled. He went to hostel and died by suicide.

Student's father suddenly realised that since last many months, his son was subjected to caste based abuses by Prof Doolla, the faculty who caught him cheating, and this caste based harassment was "under the directions of IIT director".

Politically suitable scenario, caste groups jump in. Dalit Politicians jump in, including those in power and speak against the professor.

The eminent and illustrious professor, with an impeccable career, is now subjected to a media trial, receives threats, faces calls to be hanged, and is booked under the SC/ST Atrocities Act.

The IIT director resign/forced to resign.

The Ministry of Education, under which IIT operates, does not utter a single word in support of the Prof Doolla who is being hounded simply for doing his job as per the laid down procedure.

On the contrary, IIT Bombay today apologized for its tweet about the cheating incident, stating that the cause of death remains under investigation.

Next, in all likelihood Professor Doolla will be sacrificed to calm the caste groups.

This country is beyond repair.

did my https://t.co/zANOEvvHvH at IIT Bombay and my PhD at IIT Delhi. I've been a professor for 14 years now. In 22 years of watching the IIT/IIIT system closely, I have never once witnessed a teacher discriminate against a student on the basis of caste.

During my https://t.co/zANOEvvHvH, most of us had no idea what caste our batchmates belonged to. Many of my close friends were SC/ST. We never discussed it. It never entered any conversation or decision. Not once. Our exposure to the humanities department was limited, though — the term "Brahmanical patriarchy" didn't even exist back then.

As a teacher, I don't ask a student's name before solving their doubt. Often I don't know their name at all — some of my classes have 300+ students. We treat them all the same. So does every colleague I know. So did every professor who taught me.

Social media has now filled vulnerable students' heads with a lot of manufactured grievance about caste discrimination that, in my experience, doesn't exist.

THE CASE OF DR DOOLLA: FROM AWARD WINNING PROFESSOR AND EXAM INVIGILATOR TO SC/ST FIR.
Dr Doolla completed his MTech and PhD from two IITs. He has won multiple honours and awards.
On Friday, Sahil Wakode (20), a second-year Dalit student in the Energy Science section, was caught using a mobile phone during an examination conducted between 2 pm and 4 pm. Dr Doolla was the invigilator. A few hours later, Wakode died by suicide.
Soon after, protests broke out on campus with students blaming the "SYSTEM" that puts too much exam pressure on students. In response IIT Bombay put out an official statement saying no formal disciplinary action had been initiated against Wakode. The institute claims the student was counselled by faculty and assured that the incident would not derail his academic career.
NOW, THE SAME PROFESSOR WHO INVIGILATED THAT EXAM HAS BEEN NAMED IN AN FIR INVOKING PROVISIONS OF THE SC/ST ACT. The act was invoked because Wakode's parents accused Dr Doolla of "casteism".

Sahil, a B Tech student at IIT Bombay, died by suicide after being caught using a phone during an exam. IIT said he uploaded the paper to ChatGPT for answers inside the exam hall.

Police booked the faculty who caught him under the SC/ST Atrocities Act on the complaint of Sahil's father, because why not. If there’s a mechanism to spin the story from "died by suicide out of fear after getting caught cheating" into "died after being forced to cheat because evil faculty relentlessly tormented him for his caste and threatened to fail him," you might as well pull that lever.

Sahil’s father claimed that "under instructions from IIT Director", faculty member Suryanarayan Dulla had been targeting his son with casteist slurs since long, a revelation that apparently only struck him post-tragedy.

Caste-based activist groups and political parties will inevitably exploit this to engineer Rohith Vemula 2.0. We are drifting toward an educational environment where faculty members dare not report academic dishonesty or fail underperforming students, wary that a Atrocities case could be weaponized against them retrospectively.

GC and OBC faculty in colleges should avoid any form of non-public interaction with students. If an interaction is mandatory, such as during viva, wear body cams and record the entire session. Also install CCTV with a mic in your offices.

If the administration doesn't allow body cams, refuse the assignment. At worst, this may lead to disciplinary counseling; however, that remains far better than being falsely accused under the Atrocities Act, which can result in job loss, public humiliation, financial strain, imprisonment, and years of judicial harassment.

Start demanding body cams so that either the request is met or it generates enough awareness to force a public discussion on the misuse of the Atrocities Act.
