Do you notice the small waterways alongside the trails in these pictures? They are called "bisse" which are historic irrigation channels above Verbier. One of the most famous is the Bisse du Levron, built in 1465.
The primary purpose of a bisse was agricultural irrigation to prevent drought in the dry Alpine regions of Valais, Switzerland 🇨🇭. This area is surrounded by high mountains that block rain clouds, making it one of the driest parts of Switzerland. Local farmers needed a way to bring water from high mountain rivers and melting glaciers down to the dry, sun-baked meadows and vineyards below. These open channels were engineered with a very slight, consistent downward slope so water could travel for miles purely by gravity.
Kayaking on Trillium Lake in the Mt. Hood National Forest, Oregon will have you saying, “I needed that.”
National forests have over 10 million acres of lakes and reservoirs nationwide available for your enjoyment.

A tranquil summer evening across the higher terrain after several days of mostly foggy conditions and winds well above average for mid-July. Unsettled weather returns tomorrow, with summit fog redeveloping and scattered rain showers breaking out by the afternoon.
The Grosser Mythen (1,898m) rises dramatically above Schwyz in Central Switzerland 🇨🇭. The trail to the top has 47 hairpin turns, is rated T3, and is dangerous when wet! However, on nice days prepared hikers who reach the summit are treated to an amazing view of the valley and lakes below, and to the mountaintop restaurant famous for nut croissants.
Planning to hike a trail during your visit?
Be sure to check our online Backcountry Conditions map and follow our safety tips:
✅ Check https://t.co/EdGkRcI7x3 for current trail closures, restrictions, known hazards, and more detailed info.
🐻 Be bear aware. Hike in groups, be alert, make noise, and carry bear spray (and know how to use it!)
🌦️ Gear up for changing conditions. Rain, wind, sleet, and snow can be deadly if proper precautions are not taken. Always bring rain gear and extra clothes for warmth.
💧 Watch out for water. Many rivers or streams cannot be crossed until July or later. The water can be cold, fast, and more than thigh-deep, making any attempt to cross perilous. Carefully check your itinerary for stream crossings.
❄️ Check the weather forecast. Yellowstone can experience winter-like weather any time of the year. Calm, sunny mornings can abruptly turn into fierce, stormy days.

No guardrails. No safety net. Just a chain bolted into the rock and a very long way down. 😅
Angels Landing, Zion — rated 10/10 hiking trail, 0/10 for people who don't love heights. The view from the top though? Completely worth every white-knuckle step.
Have you made it to the top?⛰️
The Oregon Trail has often been called "the nation's longest graveyard."
Thousands of pioneers lost their lives on the nearly 2,000-mile journey west, and many were buried where they fell.
Today, @BLMNational archaeologists in Idaho and their partners are using specially trained Human Remains Detection dogs to help locate those forgotten graves, preserving an important chapter of America's history for future generations.
America's trail network just got a little bigger, courtesy of us. You’re welcome.
@SecretaryBurgum recently designated six new National Trails across five states, adding more than 160 miles of hiking, paddling, and outdoor recreation opportunities to America's National Trails System. 👇
