Definitely not the breed for the casual dog owner who wants an easy pet, the beauceron can be quite an enjoyable companion for the patient but confident home willing to dedicate the time to properly train, socialize and provide an outlet for their high mental and physical needs.

The beauceron is accepted in two colors - Black and rust and Harlequin, which is genetically merle with rust points on the feet, muzzle, chest and above the eyes. The breed measures between 24"-27.5" and generally weighs between 70-100lbs, with males on the larger end.

Although they are an old breed, they were not fully recognized by the @akcdoglovers until 2007, when they joined the herding group. Today this versatile, active, intelligent breed has seen success across most dog sports including obedience, agility, herding and even weight pull!

Despite being rather uncommon outside their home country of France, the Beauceron is a very old herding breed, dating back to the 1500's. The breed was created with no foreign crosses, and its closest relative is the Briard - which is almost identical in standard, outside of coat
