When Whitney Houston died in 2012, I was still in school.

I remember feeling genuinely sad. I couldn’t understand why someone with such a beautiful voice, such grace and such an enormous gift had to leave the world that way.

Years later, I learned something many people still don’t know: “I Will Always Love You” was originally written and recorded by Dolly Parton in 1973/74.

Dolly wrote it as a farewell to Porter Wagoner when she decided to leave their professional partnership.

Then Whitney Houston recorded her own version for The Bodyguard in 1992 and turned it into one of the most iconic songs in music history.
