1930 Business Advertisement for J. Church Fruiterer & Greengrocer at 97 Lower Clapton Road. Today the premises is Clapton Craft specialising in Craft Beer, Natural Wine, Cider, Local Spirits and are a Growler retailer.
Greaves & Thomas were a furniture manufacturers in Clapton, Hackney from 1911 till 1965. They were situated at Amherst works 93-103 Northwold Road and were incorporated into Schreiber furniture in 1967. The furniture from the 1960s mirrored the style of modernist Danish designers, using clean geometries, teak timber, tapered furniture legs and smooth fabrics. Greaves & Thomas invented the Put-U-Up settee-bed, much sought after today.

Dr Frederick Montague Miller was born in 1848 in Stoke Newington the son of a physician. He was twice mayor of Hackney and a general practitioner with premises at 284 Amhurst Road. Later recorded on the 1911 census shows both him and his wife living in a 13-roomed house with three servants at Northolme, 135 Upper Clapton Road, Hackney. He died on 15th August 1913 aged 65 years old.
VE Day 80 years ago which was known locally as ‘The Island’ which is today Stellman Close this specific fantastic group photo was taken on Ottaway Street.
Noticed this ghost floor signage today of what used to be Brooke’s Furniture Store at 2 Clarence Road then previously to that the building was Clarence Cinema.
It was VE Day on 8th May 1945. This photo was taken in the playground of Glyn Road School, Chelmer Road, Clapton, E5. ‘My Mum is the tall lady in the middle of the back row. I was the four month old baby she was holding’. Memoir and photo from Christine Fry.
