Why was Nigeria's first airport situated in Kano?
In July 1925 there was a spat between the Britain and the people of Kano. Fearing a revolt, the British government signalled to it's Royal Air Force based in Khartoum, Sudan to report to Nigeria and access the situation.
November 1, 1925. When the British government decided to establish an aviation sector in Nigeria Kano was considered because of its prior plane landing. Other landing ground selected were Maiduguri, Lagos, Minna and Kaduna.
The Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport is the oldest airport in Nigeria. The airport has been in operation since 1936. That's 89 years of continuous operation. Before Independence it was used as a base by the Royal Air Force, with the first aircraft landing in 1922.

In January 1977 Nigeria hosted what was and remains the largest Pan African Festival in world history - FESTAC 77. Bolstered by oil wealth, the Nigerian government spent the equivalent of $2 billion in today's dollars to stage a month long series of events centering on arts, science, history, politics and spirituality on a scale that has never been replicated.
