@GolfDigest All the comments from Americans are hilarious. When did you guys get so soft? The only time it's too cold to play golf outside is when the ground is frozen.

@GlorifiedDonkey I'll never understand gimmies in stroke play. 3-2ft putts are character building & if it's short enough to be given, just put it in. The only exception is if you're playing with someone who takes ages lining up every putt, regardless of the length. In that case, gimmies are fine.

Pike Fold - A nice mix of holes, terrific greens and, if you play well, it's very scorable. Tbh, there isn't much more to say. It's just a really solid, well laid out golf course that can be enjoyed by players at all levels. Also, the pace of play is usually very good. ★★★★☆

Mytton Fold - It's set in a lovely part of the world and the 1st is a great little short hole. Unfortunately, for me, that's where the positives end. The layout of the course, because of the land that it was built on, is dull & repetitive. Up a hill & then back down. ★★☆☆☆

@Bigboypantsgolf It's crazy. An old video of Rick's (from about 7 years ago) got recommended to me and because he was playing a course that I've played, I watched it. His swing and ball striking used to be so much better. How do you play so much golf and yet get so much worse?

Saddleworth - A fantastic mix of moorland & parkland holes, with rolling hills and tree-lined, sloping fairways, every one offers something slightly different. The views are breathtaking and even if you play badly, like I did, you'll have fun doing it. Brilliant. ★★★★★

Clitheroe - Excellent condition, wonderful greens, a great layout with a nice mix of long and short holes and lovely surrounding scenery. Honestly, there's very little not to like. If you can find a tee time for less than £40, do it. You won't be disappointed. ★★★★★

Dunscar - A tricky, tight heathland course with plenty of blind tee shots and even some blind approaches. The front 9 is better than the back, where some of the fairways crisscross and get a bit close to each other. Overall tho, it's a decent, reasonably priced track. ★★★☆☆

Mellor & Townscliffe - A pretty short course on the scorecard but, don't be fooled, it's not easy. Narrow fairways that dog-leg up and down hills make it a tricky but enjoyable challenge. Set in a lovely part of the world with stunning views, it's a quaint little gem. ★★★★☆

Halifax - A picturesque, interesting, challenging course. It's something a little bit different and, depending on weather conditions, it'll rarely play the same twice. The jaw dropping 17th is one of the craziest (in a good way) holes that I've ever played. Good fun. ★★★★☆

Stand - An excellent variety of holes, fantastic greens and a lovely setting. 14 par 4s may sound a bit dull but it is anything but: some are short, some are long and they require a mix of brain and brawn off the tee. One of the north west's best 'budget' courses. ★★★★★

@Wayne501Mardle Get yourself there Wayne and have a round of golf while you're at it: Halifax golf course has a fantastic 17th hole.

Towneley - A course that's improving year on year. Forgiving off the tee & relatively short, it's a good place to go if your game needs a confidence boost. However, because it's quite 'easy', it does attract a lot of high handicappers which can affect the pace of play. ★★★☆☆

Kirkby Lonsdale - Stunning views from pretty much every tee box, a fun, challenging layout and, considering it's located in one of the wettest parts of the country, it's always in great condition. For the price, imo, you'll struggle to find a better course in England. ★★★★★
