MALLARD CREEK GETS STATEMENT WIN
Mallard Creek has never won a girls’ basketball state championship, despite being an annual N.C. power.

Wednesday night, in Marion, the Mavericks made a big statement about their prospects to make some history this season.
Ranked No. 1 in the NCHSAA 8A statewide poll, Mallard Creek went to McDowell and routed a Titans’ team ranked No. 1 in the 7A poll.
And McDowell — a school that has won multiple state championships and was a 2024 state regional championship finalist — doesn’t lose often at home.
The Mavericks won, 58-48, on the back of trio of stellar performances: Senior Kiara Anderson had 21 points, eight steals, six rebounds and five assists. My’Asia Young had 16 points, eight rebounds and six steals. And Camri Hobbs had 11 points and three bounds.
“We’ve been talking about it before every game,” Mavericks coach Karlyn Dixon said, “about every game being a big game, and preparing for the fight and being disciplined and sticking to our game plan. But to drive two hours on the activity bus and get a double digit win is pretty significant.”
Mallard Creek improved to 6-0, playing perhaps the toughest schedule it’s ever taken on.
Dixon said she and her staff made sure to celebrate the Mavericks in the locker room so the team would understand the significance of beating one of North Carolina’s signature programs on the road.
Mallard Creek led by as many as 15 in the second half.
“I think sometimes they don’t understand how big it is to come up that mountain and get a win,” Dixon said. “We just wanted to honor them a little bit.
“They earned it.”
